The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award at St Peter’s College
Between Thursday, 1st December and Sunday, 4th, four students from St Peter’s College walked the Greenstone-Caples Track as part of the Adventurous Journey component of their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Molly Gray, Eve McKenzie, and Emma Shanks are working towards completion of the ‘Silver’ level, and Rachael Miller is working to complete ‘Gold’. They were accompanied by two students from Gore High School, Emma Fotheringham and Annalei Symons, and Ruby Miller from Southland Girls’ High School. Mrs Jacqui Thompson and Mr John Ryan were also present, but the student party was independent in almost every respect. The Greenstone-Caples is a challenging four day walk, and all seven girls were a credit to themselves, their whānau, and their respective school communities.
Registrations for the Duke of Edinburgh Award can be made at any time online by visiting https://dofehillary.org.nz Next year, we will be offering the Bronze Award to all students from Year 9. This is a great opportunity to develop important life skills, stretch yourself, and make new friends. Students in the senior school have direct entry to the Silver and Gold Award levels.
We would really like to build up a ‘library’ of gear that could help tamariki to engage with the great outdoors. Not having the right equipment can be a barrier to young people getting out there. If you happen to no longer require any of the following items, please consider dropping them into the school office labelled ‘Duke of Ed’:
- Raincoats
- Thermals and Fleeces
- Boots
- Sleeping bags
- Tramping Packs
