Dear South Parents and Guardians:
It was wonderful to see all the parents that attended our Sixth Grade Curriculum Night. We hope that everyone walked away from the evening with an understanding of each class' curriculum and expectations. If you still have questions, feel free to contact your child's teachers. We are looking forward to the Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Curriculum Night on September 19th at 6:30pm.
On Tuesday, South's Lunchroom Supervisors and Social Workers worked with the students to sit with their friends at lunch. The process went relatively smoothly. Students have had the ability to move tables last week to find a seat they are comfortable with. If there is an issue and students would like to move their seat, please have your child speak to a Lunchroom Supervisor.
Please check your child's backpack on Friday, September 13 for Illinois Assessment for Readiness Test Scores from the 23-24 school year.
As we move towards the end of the third week of school, we are glad to get back into the swing of normal school activities, such as after-school clubs and sports. Cross country, girl's basketball, and several clubs have already begun. Many more clubs will begin in the next few weeks. Please remind your child to look for the information regarding extra-curricular activities during the morning announcements. We encourage every student to be involved in at least one after-school activity throughout the school year.
South’s school-wide expectations for students have been communicated and established. We continue to reinforce these expectations. Please remind your child to follow the Cardinal Way, and the expectations of being prepared and on time to class, being mindful to teachers and students, and being safe at school.
Recently, students have been using their cellphone to contact their parents that they are sick and need to be picked up from school. This is being done without the student being seen by the school nurse. Please remind your child to visit the school nurse before contacting you. The nurse needs to approve the student's dismissal for it to be considered an excused absence.
Finally, please remind your child to lock up their bike/scooters and helmet to the bike racks at school. We have several areas of bike racks in front of the building, so there is plenty of room for all of our students to lock up their bikes.
Our goal at South is to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all students and staff. Please help support us in these endeavors.
Have a great weekend!

Hispanic Heritage Month
A month to celebrate the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans and the many contributions they have made to American culture.
Celebrated September 15-October 15
Mexican Independence Day: September 16
This holiday celebrates Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810.
Mexican Independence Day is a nationwide celebration. The country’s leaders were inspired by our own July 4 Independence Day festivities, so fireworks fill the skies at night and the day is filled with patriotic speeches, flag-waving, parades, live music, and feasts.
NWEA MAP Testing Information
The NWEA MAP test is a computer-administered assessment that aligns with the Illinois math and reading standards. District 25 uses the information from the MAP assessment in a few ways including to help determine academic intervention groups, as an essential part of the advanced learning placement, as well as to identify student strengths and needs for the next school year.
All South students will be taking the NWEA Fall MAP assessments on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 and Thursday, September 19, 2024.
Please remind your child to charge their Chromebooks, and bring in earbuds for the testing sessions. As a reminder, it is important for students to eat a healthy breakfast, and get a good night's sleep before testing so they can perform their best. Thank you for your assistance in helping to prepare your child for NWEA MAP testing.

Prospect HS Fan Information
Prospect High School is thrilled to see so many future Knights at our Friday night football games. However, non-high school-aged students will only be admitted when accompanied by their parent(s) or guardian(s) at the gate. Patrons are not allowed to bring in groups of students and claim them as their own. These students are expected to sit with their parent(s) or guardian(s) during the game and must leave when their parent/guardian leaves. Additionally, spectators are not allowed to engage in pick-up games, bring sporting equipment into the stadium, or carry backpacks. This policy is in place due to on-going discipline issues with unsupervised non-high school age students, and we appreciate your partnership in creating a safe game day atmosphere at Prospect High School.
Cross Country
Practices
We finally got to have regular practices again! Our sixth graders are learning our practice routines after school, and our seventh/eighth graders are doing a wonderful job teaching them.
Dual Meet vs Cooper — Tuesday, Sept. 3rd
We had a great showing at our Dual Meet against Cooper on Tuesday! It's always great to get on a nice hilly course like Cooper's to push our athletes and see what they can do on more variable terrain. Great job to everyone who ran in the Dual Meet at Cooper!
Please see HERE to view the results/times from the Cooper meet. (We are working on transferring the results to a spreadsheet, which we will share when complete).
Prairie Stampede — Friday, Sept. 6th
This was the biggest meet of the year and as always it was such a fun meet. Definitely had the best weather of the season so far! This was the first 2-mile race for a lot of our athletes, and they did an AMAZING job! It was great seeing our sixth and seventh grade girls and boys, not only run their first 2-mile race, but race extremely well against hard competition to place 2nd and 4th as a team respectively. And our eighth graders! Wow, was it fun to see a lot of their times drop! And on a challenging course too!
Please click HERE to see the results for the Prairie Stampede
Golf
Stanley Powers (eighth grade) qualified for the IESA state golf tournament on September 13 with a score of 82 at the recent golf sectional in Rockford. Good luck Stan!
