Dr. Barker's Weekly Report 9.02.24
9/02/24 - Volume 6, Issue 3
Dr. Barker's Message
Good Evening Everyone!
Thank you to everyone for a great first week! Our staff did an amazing job preparing for the implementation of our new schedule and our students responded by meeting and exceeding our expectations! The student common areas were consistently cleaned, students used the small group rooms appropriately, quiet study areas were honored, and students enjoyed the opportunity to relax with friends, play basketball, or begin working collaboratively on early projects. Let's keep up the great work as we head into the second week!
Students - What a week! Thank you for your cooperation as we begin to roll out our Lunch & Learn schedule. We appreciate your willingness to work with us as we set expectations for Lunch & Learn in your Homerooms and gave our food service staff an opportunity to get adjusted to this new schedule. This week our 9th & 10th grade students will be in Homeroom during Lunch 1 and will eat during Lunch 2. Our 9th grade students will begin their Peer Mentorship orientation with our upperclassmen leaders and our 10th grade students will be introduced to Graduation Project requirements, a Counseling Center Overview, Smart Futures requirements, and Executive Functioning Skills. Our 11th & 12th grade students will go directly to L&L.
Parents - Thank you to everyone for working with us as we implemented our new traffic pattern this past week. We know that there were backups on Manor Avenue and we are working with the Fire Police, Penn Dot, our on-campus procedures, and our busing contractors to help ease some of the congestion. Please know that there are over 4000 students arriving to campus in the morning and while we are working to make improvements, the half hour from 7:20 - 7:50am will always be a heavy traffic time. To that end, I encourage parents to have their children ride the bus, plan to arrive before 7:20am, or plan to make only one drop off on campus rather than going to multiple buildings. The drop off loops at STEM and DMS are significantly less congested and students have sidewalks they can use to get to WEST or the other two buildings. We will continue to have a number of staff in place to help direct traffic on campus but please view the New Traffic Pattern for more information and plan to experiment with our various drop off options to determine which one will get you on and off campus the most effectively in the morning.
Back To School Night
On Thursday evening WEST will be hosting our annual Back To School Night. This night is an opportunity to meet your child's teachers, hear about curricular content in each academic area, and tour the building. This year we are excited to share our newly renovated spaces with all of you and we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to see the facilities that your students will be using on a daily basis here at WEST!
Have a great day WEST!
Kurt Barker, Ed.D.
Principal, DHS WEST

Construction Update:
While much of the construction will be completed by the beginning of the school year, please know that there will still be a number of finishing touches that need to be completed. While the building will have reached the point of substantial completion, and will be safe for full occupancy, we anticipate that at least through the month of September, a select few contractors will be in and out of classrooms during the day and working in the evenings to address punch list items before the district signs for completion. Please expect to see ceiling tiles removed, trim pieces missing, and paint and spackle in various stages of completion. Our teachers are excited to get into their classrooms and some have already begun to unpack. As more areas are turned over to our staff we are working diligently to have them prepared for students when they arrive.
