ADMHS-HEALTH SCIENCE ALLIANCE WEBSITE
As we prepare for upcoming events and educational opportunities for our HSA students in 2020-2021, we need to do some fundraising. Since we do not receive funding from the county for events like off-site educational opportunities and the Red Cord Banquet to honor seniors, we depend on friends like you to help the Academy with your donations. We have heard from parents that many prefer to donate money directly vs. purchasing items that might incur additional costs such as shipping or taxes. There are two advantages to that - #1 Donating by clicking a button is quick and easy, and #2 All money goes directly to the Academy. Checks are also welcome and should be made out to AD Health Alliance and sent to ADHS at 1420 Athens Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606. And, of course, any amount donated is tax-deductible.
We are grateful for any amount you donate and assure you that many good things are in the works that will directly impact your students as they prepare for a career in the health sciences at Athens Drive. Thank you in advance!
Our annual fundraisers helps to support the HSCA Alliance in opportunities & operations for students.

SHIFT NC YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL (YAC)
We are excited to announce the launch of the SHIFT NC Youth Advisory Council (YAC). This council will provide an opportunity for participants ages 15-19 to develop leadership, advocacy, and peer education skills in addition to learning about sexual and reproductive health. Participants will provide valuable feedback to ensure that our programming meets the diverse needs of youth living in NC.
We hope to recruit 12-15 youth of diverse identities and experiences from across North Carolina and strongly encourage young people with marginalized identities to apply. Due to COVID-19, the inaugural program year will be virtual and shortened, starting in January 2021 and ending in June 2021. Each month, there will be one skills-building training and one meeting to discuss programmatic goals. Ideally, we would like council members to stay on for the following year, which will be Sept. 2021-June 2022 and involve more skill-building sessions. Applications for this program year will be due by November 30. Qualified applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview during the week of December 7-11.
Watch for more information to be shared. https://www.shiftnc.org/

INFORMATION FROM A HSCA BUSINESS PARTNER - RALEIGH FOOT & ANKLE
Do you have pain under your heel or arch when starting to walk after sitting or sleeping? Does the pain, at times, ease off a little once you walk around for a few minutes? If this sounds like you then you may have plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, between the ball of the foot and the heel.
Heel pain is probably the most common symptom we treat here at Foot & Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic. A wide variety of conditions can cause heel pain, the most common diagnosisâby a wide marginâis plantar fasciitis.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Across the bottom of your foot, from the base of the toes to the front of the heel, stretches a band of tough-yet-flexible connective tissue known as the plantar fascia. This tissue acts like a bowstring (or shock absorber), supporting your arch. It gently stretches and contracts to both cushion your steps and âspringâ you forward when you push off the ground. Unfortunately, that band of tissue may, for one reason or another, become overstretched and strained through constant wear and tear. When that happens, tiny fibers begin to fray and tear, causing pain and swelling.
What Are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?
- Pain on the bottom of the heel, or nearby.
- Increased pain after exercise (not during).
- Pain in the arch of the foot.
- Pain that is worse in the morning or when you stand after sitting for a long time.
- A swollen heel.
- Pain that continues for months.
- A tight Achilles tendon. (80% of people report this symptom.) Your Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel.
How Is Plantar Fasciitis Treated?
- Arch supports or custom orthotics to cushion your heels, support your feet, and address biomechanical issues causing your heel pain.
- EPATÂŽ shock wave therapy which uses acoustic pressure waves to safely increase metabolism and blood flow, which stimulates or enhances healing of the injury.
- Oral anti-inflammatory medication or steroid ("cortisone") injection to relieve pain.
- Physical therapy & Taping
- Wearing a splint at night to keep the plantar fascia, arch, and calf stretched while you sleep.
- Lifestyle adjustments (lose weight, alter your training routine, take more breaks at work, etc.)
*Services may vary by location.
The best treatment protocol for you personally will depend on which contributing factors were the most responsible for your plantar fasciitis. The severity of your symptoms also plays a role. Itâs always wise to get a comprehensive foot exam by one of our podiatrists to develop a treatment plan customized to your specific situation. Check out Raleigh Foot & Ankle Specialists - Dr. Kirk Woelffer (Holly Springs & Raleigh {Millbrook} Locations).

ERICA CHAN'S FEATURE IN THE ORACLE
đCOVID EXPLAINED đŚ
ERIKA CHAN CLASS OF 2023 MISSION REGARDING COVID
She had an idea to use science and facts to answer the common questions about the coronavirus (COVID). The format is made to be simple for a better understanding. She uses simple facts, a comic, and a metaphor to explain more complicated questions.
Her goal of this project is to help fight the misinformation about this pandemic.
7 TIPS FOR SAFE CONTACTLESS TRICK OR TREATING
The year is flying by faster than a witch on a broomstick. That means Halloween is just around the corner. Whether youâre heading out in the neighborhood or keeping it close to home, make trick-or-treating fun and safe this year with these seven helpful tips.
TIP 1: Stay with Your Group
If you go out, keep all your ghouls and goblins together in one group. Make sure youâve got your cellphone fully charged and handy. You want to be sure you can easily get in touch with other adults in the group and those at home manning the trick-or-treat station.
TIP 2: Be Visible At Night
Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags. This makes it easier for drivers to see your trick-or-treaters and helps you stick with your Halloween crew.
TIP 3: Pick the Safest Route
When planning your trick-or-treat route, be sure to stick to well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk when possible. Itâs easy to get excited about getting to the house thatâs giving away full-size Snickers bars, so remind your crew to always look both ways before crossing the street.
TIP 4: Mask Up and Make it Fashion
Weâre all wearing masks to protect each other, so why not make your mask part of this yearâs costume? DG has non-medical face masks, coverings, gaiters and everything you need to bedazzle, paint and sticker your way into a whole lotta look.
TIP 5: Keep Sanitizer Handy
Weâve all heard it a million times by now, but it bears repeating: sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. Especially on this high-touch holiday. Get a big bottle to fill small, individual-sized bottles that can be clipped to treat bag handles so that kids always have sanitizer close at hand.
TIP 6: Contactless Trick-Or-Treating
If you want to go all the way hands-off this Halloween, create an outdoor sanitizing station.
- Set out a small table with sanitizer
- Make it festive with fun and decor from DG
- Add individual treat bags in a bowl for easy grab-and-go pickup
- Leave a note on your front door for families to take a bag
- Leave a Bluetooth speaker to play some spooky music
- Turn your front porch light off once your bowl is empty
TIP 7: Celebrate at Home
Who says you have to go out on Halloween? You can keep it creepy at home with these activities and crafts.
- Trick-or-Treat from room to room
- Host a small but spooky gathering
- Make a fun candy craft
- Decorate trick-or-treat bags
THE THREE W'S
Know Your Ws: Wear, Wait, Wash
The NC Department of Health and Human Services is asking people to remember these three things as we stay strong and continue to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19. If you leave home, practice your Ws: Wear, Wait, Wash
- Wear a cloth face covering if you will be with other people
- Wait 6 feet apart. Avoid close contact.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.
Help protect your family and neighbors from COVID-19.
Know the 3 Ws. Wear. Wait. Wash.
#StayStrongNC and get the latest at nc.gov/covid19HSCA ACADEMY STUDENT & PARENT CREATE "THE QUARANTINE COOKBOOK" - PROCEEDS BENEFIT INTERACT
During quarantine Mary Jordan (Class of 2022) and Mom (Noel Tucker) worked on a cookbook to benefit INTERACT. It is called "The Quarantine Cookbook" and it includes over 150 recipes, art creations and quotes from 64 unique and wonderful people! The cookbook was made to share good thoughts and recipes that were made during the COVID 19 crisis while collecting funds to help victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a true issue every day and has increased during the COVID 19 crisis. All proceeds from the sale of the Quarantine Cookbook will go to INTERACT - a unique nonprofit in Wake County that supports victims of domestic violence.
Digital copies via email are only five dollars and a printed copy, including mailing it, is only ten dollars. Digital copies will be emailed after Venmo or a check is received ($5) and printed copies will be mailed after Venmo or a check is received ($10) (printed copies may take a few days to get to you) Purchase of the cookbook is an honor system so we ask that folks don't forward the digital copy. The digital copy is two files because it is a big file and the printed copies are two booklets because thatâs what my copier allows for number of pages ( each is about 55 pages) Please note this is a grassroots effort, not a professional publishing or commercial endeavor. The cost of the paper, printing and mailing is all donated by our family.
Feel free to share the word and pass along this info. Even if you don't like to cook, there are some good quotes and the education on INTERACT is a good thing. Hulsey purchased and have loved the recipes and inspirational quotes...Highly recommend!
Here is the link to order with the Venmo code, just copy and paste in your browser:
