Student Spotlight
An Interview with Sydney Menne, 2022 Brooke Owens Fellow
Sydney Menne, DAAD-RISE Germany awardee and Pearl I. Young awardee, spoke with NSPA student Claire Weltz to tell us about her experience applying for her latest accomplishment - becoming a Brooke Owens Fellow. She is the first "Brookie" from a university in North Dakota.
Over 1000+ students applied from around the world, coming from Ivy League universities, major research universities, historically black colleges and universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and major international universities. Fifty-one students were selected after multiple interviews. The Fellows were selected based on their commitment to their communities, stand-out creative abilities, record of leadership, incredible talent, and their desire to pursue a career in aerospace. Through the Fellowship, Sydney will join the propulsion engineering team for the LauncherOne rocket with Virgin Orbit in Long Beach, CA this summer.

Some Final Thoughts
The Year of Extremes
Happy Lunar New Year! This holiday, celebrated in many parts of the world, is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, the Water Tiger more precisely. According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Tiger symbolizes strength and power and inspires respect and fear. The water element offers a calming feature that brings empathy and social perceptiveness. Individuals born this year are predicted to be outspoken in the face of injustice, with strong humanitarian instincts that compel them to act if they see a wrong perpetrated upon another.
Much like the Tiger, 2022 is predicted to be full of action. As we embark on a year of extremes, may many scholarship activities land on the side of great prosperity for all who apply. This year seems to be off to a great start. Congratulations again to Sydney Menne who was named a 2022 Brooke Owens Fellow. Congratulations to our Semi-Finalists: Payton Cole, Elisabeth Kohl, Gabriel Randall, and Taylor Roehl. In the world of national scholarship competition, we focus on the process and let the end take care of itself.
May the Year of the Tiger bring you to great heights,
Yee Han Chu PhD MSSW
