Speech and Debate Win BEST OVERALL DEBATE SCHOOL 2nd Year in a Row
Nearly fifteen-hundred students from one-hundred, thirty schools, and thirteen states attended the 32nd annual Jack Howe Memorial Tournament at Cal State Long Beach. Peninsula won the tournament sweepstakes as best overall debate school for the second year in a row, despite only competing in two of the six debate events entered. Not surprisingly, Peninsula students also earned many individual accolades.
In varsity policy debate, the senior team of Mike Li and Brandon Lin were tournament champions—finishing the tournament without losing a ballot. The team of senior Zhian Xu and junior Aiden Kwon reached the semifinal round (top 4). Zhian and Aiden also won every single ballot during the tournament but were “walked over” on tiebreakers (a walk-over occurs when students from the same school are paired in elimination rounds, in which case the higher seed advances). Senior Jeremy Kim and junior Mason Kim reached the quarterfinal round (top 8). Senior Kris Deng and junior Jonathan Yang, sophomores Grant and Timothy Liu, sophomores Aadi Bhagat amd Xavier Burchfield, and freshmen James Pan and Braden Yian reached the double-octafinal round (top 32). Mike was the tournament’s second speaker and Brandon was fourth. In novice policy debate, freshmen Adam Khaja and Matthew Song reached the quarterfinals. Adam was sixth speaker and Matthew was eighth.
In varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, junior Sterling Utovac reached the final round (top 2). Sophomore Kevin Han reached the quarterfinal round. Senior Aaron Yi reached the octafinal round (top 16). Seniors Austin Loui. Brian Son, and Kensho Nishio reached the double-octafinal round (Kensho was walked over). Sterling was second speaker. In junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, freshman Eva Christen reached the partial octafinal round (top 9).
In original spoken word poetry, senior Iris Yi was the tournament champion.
PTSA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
Calling all artistic Panthers!
The annual PTSA Reflections program is in full swing and we encourage your participation. The deadline for entries is October 24th, 2024.
Each year, the PTA Reflections program offers students a platform to express their unique perspectives and interpretation of a student-created theme. For the 2024-2025 school year, the theme is “Accepting Imperfection,” which serves as a powerful reminder that our flaws and mistakes are just as much a part of us as our strengths and are a natural and beautiful part of being human.
To find more information go to the link below and then click on the PV Peninsula icon and enter. Also, on the entry form, please enter the email address that you’re most likely to check so we can contact you if needed.
