Early Stage 1 News
Kindergarten has had an incredible start to the school year! We are so proud of our little learners and grateful to our wonderful parents and caregivers for helping make their transition to school such a positive experience. Our Kindy students are settling in beautifully, making new friends, and learning all about their classroom and school routines.
It has been a joy to see our Kindergarten students exploring early writing and fine motor skills with such enthusiasm! They have been excitedly practising writing their names, forming letters, and bringing their ideas to life through drawings. They are also beginning to label their pictures and have a go at writing simple sentences. We can't wait to see how they continue to grow and shine!
Stage 1 News
Welcome to 2025!
A very warm welcome to all our families as we begin the exciting journey of 2025! The Stage 1 team is thrilled to be back, and we’ve already had a wonderful start to the year. Our students have settled in beautifully, adjusting to the new routines and expectations of Year 1 and Year 2. It’s fantastic to see them growing in confidence as they embark on this next stage of their learning.
We are excited to introduce our wonderful teaching team:
Ms Dina El Hafez – Stage 1 Assistant Principal, teaching S1 Koolah.
Miss Foley – teaching S1 Yarra.
Mrs King – teaching S1 Myrtle.
Miss Meer - teaching S1 Rosella.
Miss Calderwood – teaching S1 Wattle.
We have kicked off the year with a whole-school focus on explicit teaching in mathematics. Our students are engaging in daily reviews that consolidate their prior learning and ensure they are ready for new challenges ahead. It’s amazing to see how quickly they are grasping new concepts and building a strong foundation in math.
In English, we are exploring the theme of inclusion. Our students are learning how to write stories that not only include others but celebrate the unique qualities of each person. It’s been heartwarming to see them exploring narratives with kindness and empathy at their core.
We have also started Walker Learning, where our students are exploring Key Learning Areas through fun, hands-on investigation stations. This approach encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, and it’s already proving to be a hit with our learners!
In sport, Mr Kay has been working with the students on fundamental movement skills and navigating an obstacle course. The students are having an absolute blast while developing important physical skills and teamwork.
It’s truly a joy to be on Stage 1, and we look forward to an exciting year ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to watch our students thrive in this wonderful learning environment.
Best regards,
The Stage 1 Teaching Team
Stage 2 News
Stage 2 has had an exciting and engaging start to the year! We are thrilled to welcome our students and introduce our wonderful teaching team: Mrs B (Assistant Principal), Miss Clarke, Mr Khoury, Mr Robinson and Mr Cooney
Explicit Teaching in Mathematics
This term, Stage 2 students have been strengthening their mathematical skills through our new maths program, which focuses on explicit teaching, daily reviews, and hands-on learning experiences. They have been deepening their understanding of numbers and place value through structured lessons and guided practice. In addition, students have been exploring measurement concepts, including length and mass, using concrete materials to compare and estimate. With a strong emphasis on fluency and problem-solving, students have been developing efficient strategies to tackle addition and subtraction problems with confidence. The new program is already making a positive impact, helping students build a solid foundation in numeracy.
Physical Education, Health, and Wellbeing
In Physical Education and Health lessons, Stage 2 has been focusing on teamwork, empathy, inclusion, and respect. In our Life Skills Go sessions with Ms Julie, students have enjoyed participating in role-play games to express and identify emotions. On Fridays, students have been actively involved in Stage Sports Day, where they are developing fundamental movement skills, including ball-handling techniques, coordination, and learning the basics of organised games such as teamwork, strategy, and fair play.
Stage 3 News
Welcome back for another wonderful year in Stage 3. Our Stage 3 students are settling well into their school routines. After the excitement of the holidays, it’s fantastic to see students refocusing on their learning, developing positive habits, and embracing new challenges with enthusiasm.
Introducing our Stage 3 classes with their exciting theme names.
4/5 Grevillea with Miss Wong and Mrs Palani.
Grevilleas are beautiful, low-maintenance Australian native plants known for their bright, spider-like flowers that attract birds, bees, and butterflies. They come in various shapes and colors, including red, pink, orange, and yellow, and are perfect for adding color to the garden year-round. Grevilleas love full sun, well-drained soil, and need little water once established. They also grow in different sizes, from small ground covers to tall trees.
S3 Bolwarra with Mrs Williams
The Bolwarra is a unique Australian native plant, also known as the Native Guava, though it's not related to true guavas. It is a small tree or shrub found in rainforests along the east coast of Australia. Bolwarra produces fragrant cream-colored flowers that bloom in summer, followed by edible, round, yellow-green fruit with a strong, sweet aroma. The fruit is enjoyed by wildlife and can be eaten fresh or used in jams and sauces.
S3 Hakea with Miss Rifai
Hakea is a hardy Australian native plant known for its needle-like or leathery leaves and unique, spiky flowers that resemble Grevilleas. Part of the Proteaceae family, Hakeas are great for attracting birds and bees with their nectar-rich blooms, which come in shades of white, pink, red, and yellow. Many species have woody seed pods that only open after a fire, making them important for bush regeneration.
S3 Hibiscus with Ms Todesco and Ms Goldeli
Hibiscus plants are loved in Australia for their big, colorful flowers that attract birds and bees. While many gardens feature tropical hibiscus, Australia also has native varieties like Hibiscus heterophyllus (Native Rosella) with pink, white, or yellow flowers and Alyogyne huegelii (Blue Hibiscus) with purple blooms. These plants grow well in full sun with well-drained soil and need regular watering to keep flowering.
In English this term, we have been focused on exploring characterisation, mainly through the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. Students have been discovering all about character within themselves and how our relationships develop character.
We have kicked off the year with a whole-school focus on explicit teaching in mathematics. Our students are engaging in daily reviews to reinforce prior learning and prepare for new challenges. It’s inspiring to see how quickly they grasp new concepts and strengthen their mathematical foundations.
With plenty of exciting events, projects, and excursions ahead, we are looking forward to an enriching and successful year. We will share our learning with you more on Seesaw.
Mobile Phones and Smartwatches In School
At Guildford West School we acknowledge the growing ownership and use of mobile phones and smartwatches amongst our students and the associated issues with the use of digital devices in school.
Guildford West Public School follows the NSW Department of Education Student Use of Digital Devices and Online Services guide and Action Plan, which includes concerns when these devices are brought to school:
● Health issues for young children using mobile phones and smartwatches excessively.
● The possibility of expensive phones and smartwatches being lost, damaged or stolen;
● Safe storage of phones and smartwatches during school hours; and
● Inappropriate use of phones and smartwatches during school hours
Students are not required to bring mobile phones and smartwatches to school. Please remember that in case of emergencies, students may be contacted through the school office.
However, the school does acknowledge that parents may feel it is necessary for students to use a mobile phone for safety while travelling independently to and from school.
If parents/carers are requesting their child/ren to bring a phone or smartwatch to school, they will be signed in before school and out of the office at the end of the day by your child and it’s expected that smartwatches are set to school mode.
Student eyecare program
The school is pleased to announce that the Student Eyecare Program will be running at the school in early Term 2, 2025. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours to provide students with a free comprehensive eye examination that is covered through Medicare Australia. 1 in 6 students have eye conditions that go undetected. This is due to the high level of visual demand on their eyes from books, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Every student will receive a full report about their eye health and a prescription will be provided if glasses are required. The prescription can be taken to any optical store to get the glasses made. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity. To sign up, register online at: https://forms.gle/qP99dRpFr48WvmBm8
