Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
Meadow Drive, Hampton Street, and Jackson Ave read together!
What is the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge?
Unlike the ice bucket, Tide pod, or planking challenges, Scholastic Summer Reading is a challenge that won't make parents go crazy. Every summer, Meadow, Hampton, and Jackson PTAs, the New York State Senator's office, and all of our local public libraries already encourage reading programs, but this summer our students can earn prizes for turning pages!
The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is an online reading program that allows parents to log minutes read electronically, much like the PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) programs we run in March, but without the paper trail! Our aim? To keep kids reading all summer long. Kids can earn digital rewards and learn about great new books to read, as well as set a timer from their account and see on the map where other schools are participating!
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States, this year’s theme is “A Magical Summer of Reading.”
We are happy to report that Meadow Drive, Hampton Street, and Jackson Avenue elementary schools will be participating this summer!
How does it work?
It's not an app you have to download, but Scholastic has a brand-new, mobile-responsive website this year so your child can track summer reading minutes on the go! From your phone, tablet, or computer, you can log reading minutes and see how much our school has read total, as well as access reading lists, book suggestions, videos, activities, earn badges, and more. scholastic.com/summer
To participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, all children have been registered by an administrator in the district. Just follow the log in instructions on the welcome letter that was sent home with your child so he/she can begin entering reading minutes, earning digital rewards, and accessing free resources.
All students will use their mineola workspace email addresses. (For example, let's say we have a kindergartener named John Doe who graduates in 2030, his log in would be jdoe30@mineolak12workspace.com and his password would be Mineola30. If the capital M doesn't work, try lowercase: mineola30)
Ages 4-9 is our core group, but if you read aloud to your younger children, you can log reading minutes on their behalf!
Look for instructions, student IDs, and log in information in your child's folder this week!
What can my kid win?
If your child reads for an hour a week, he/she will win a medal!
Also every week of the summer we will randomly select a student whose parents share a picture of him/her reading on Twitter using the hashtags #MeadowDrReads, #HamptonStReads, or #JacksonAveReads to win a free book from the fall Scholastic Book Fair. (Tag the school your child will enter in the fall.) We also encourage parents to add #MineolaProud.
Meadow Drive, Hampton Street, and Jackson Avenue schools have set a school-wide summer reading goal of 250,000 minutes. If the schools meet or surpass this goal, they will win a magical surprise when we return to school in the fall.
Why should we participate?
The latest research from the Kids & Family Reading Report™: 6th Edition shows 80 percent of kids ages 6-17 and 96% of their parents agree “reading books during the summer helps kids during the school year!” Studies show that when kids don’t read over the summer, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they go back to school. Keeping kids reading over the summer helps them maintain or increase their reading and learning skills.
Students will earn certificates of achievement, medals, and digital rewards as they meet their summer reading goals.
Is the website safe for kids?
