Blending Creative Techniques into Practice
What difference does creativity make in therapy, anyway?
A creative therapist has to hold both—the theoretical map and the creative, therapeutic process–and respond accordingly.
School Based Adlerian Art Therapy
Brief-time limited Here and Now Nonjudgmental Safe/ caring environment Client controlled creativity Feelings are communicated safely Ability to focus on future and strengths internally as well as visually
I also often use techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy such as scaling, re-framing, mindfulness meditation and art techniques to stopping automatic negative thoughts.”
The Zentangle method can improve self-esteem and support individual confidence, creativity and cooperation in team efforts.
See real sample picture of a 7th grade female student using the Zentangle method. Both student and counselor draw tiles concurrently. This paticuliar session focused on making mistakes using the pen and related that into life as a middle school.

Individual Counseling
Developing string study skills is the key to achieving academic success in school. Using the Step Up to Better Grades helped one Sacred Heart elementary student learn skills in a fun interactive way with this school counselor. These lessons give an overview of the importance of instilling goo study habits and how they connect school and careers. It is these habits that will carry on throughout a person's life into the world of post-secondary work.
The cognitive, social, physical, and cultural aspects of this student were assessed by using creative drawings and pictures with the help of this school counselor. Parent and teacher inventories were also collected regarding what child thinks about self, others and school, which were also used to gather information. A total of 8 core lessons or habits were taught one-on-one with this student. Student survey indicated that he would recommend this to his friends.
Small Group Counseling
One of our 5th grade students left a note for this counselor, stating that she was very concerned about some things that were going on with the girls in her grade. This brave student shared her concerns with this counselor. These feelings related to isolation, negative self-esteem, selective friendships and name calling.
This girls group was the perfect opportunity to infuse Narrative therapy as a way to connect, relate and educate on issues that this age group often struggles with.
Lesson 1 My Secret Bully- Trudy Ludwig

2. Discuss how characters in story acted by listing friendly and unfriendly qualities.
3. Think-pair-share times when students were good friends and times when they could have been better friends.
4. Illustrate work project using markers.
5.Share pictures with class, then display project. Discuss what worked well/what could have been improved with outcome.
6 Evaluation: observe students while working with partners and in small groups; observe if students select and illustrate an appropriate friendship quality
ADHD Parent/Teacher Counseling Resource
Students with ADHD may also have difficulties with maintaining attention, executive function (or the brain’s ability to begin an activity, organize itself and manage tasks) and working memory. ADHD is seen about 3 times more often in boys than in girls. ADHD affects children of all ethnic backgrounds and all socioeconomic levels.
Many teachers struggle in talking with parents about ADHD during parent/teacher conferences. While providing support, I noticed that many were having a difficult time explaining the basics of the disorder. I developed and distributed this quick ADHD resource to help aid teachers and parents who may be concerned.

Magic Wand- magic wand to your tool box. My magic wand was gift from someone who believed in me and saw my potential...and that's the best kind of magic to give someone. Now, who doesn't need that? She waves it over the class to see if the students are ready to start. She waves it over students when they need courage to answer a question. She waves it over the class to see if they exhibited good behavior during her lesson. The students all wait to see if it lights up and makes a sound. If it does, then she lets the teacher know and they get a chance for whatever the teacher plans for the class when they are good. She uses it all the time. Magic wands protect you, they give you extra strength, special powers and make all the bad, negative stuff go away! Hint...that's why my logo has a magic wand in the design.

Meet Your School Counselor
I enjoyed bringing in fun toys to introduce using the Mrs. Potato Head to introduce myself as the new intern for my K-2 grade students.
My ears listen to you whenever you need someone to listen to your feelings or problems. My helping hands and arms for hugs. My mouth speaks kind word, but never repeats what you say unless you are in danger or are being hurt. My feet walk to your class, playground and lunchrooms. My bad of tricks help you to find new skills.
Mrs. Lehmann can help you in all of these ways and many more. Tell your parents, grandparents, or teachers if you think you want to talk to your school counselor...or come see me in my office! I am always happy to talk to you.
Always work with student strengths!

Goodbye...but not forgotten
@ and with the Sacred Heart Stars.
The students here at Sacred Heart have been great to work with. I have truly enjoyed every moment that I have been allowed to interact with them. I am so very thankful for this opportunity!
I especially want to thank Trevor M. He took me under his wing and showed me the "school counseling ropes". As my site supervisor, he really did an amazing job. I could not have had a better role model and teacher. My last day at Sacred Heart was on March 12, 2015.
In an increasingly complex, demanding and competitive 21st century, students need to learn more than the 3R’s they are tested on in school. It’s time to help them go “above & beyond”, by embracing the 4Cs –communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. -taken from website
