Dear Walker Families,
What a fantastic year we have had at Walker! This year, we enjoyed a full school year in our beautiful new building. We welcomed over 115 new students. Our well-attended, informative, and fun events built community and provided opportunities for families to connect with one another. We had a record number of over 130 family and community volunteers for our biggest and most successful Fall Festival fundraiser, organized by our fabulous PTO!
Our staff focused on creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment and reduced behavior referrals by a phenomenal 36%! We worked diligently to differentiate our literacy instruction and increased reading grade-level scores by 63%! We implemented a new district math curriculum, improved our math instructional practices, encouraged more structured student dialogue focused on math, and we saw a 168% increase in grade-level math scores!
This growth and achievement was made possible by our dedicated, skilled, and caring staff; our collaborative, supportive, and engaged family community; and our brilliant, kind, and tenacious students. Thank you all for your support, care, and enthusiasm for making our school the wonderful Walker it is!
Please see below for next year's district calendar, Ashland Kids Eat Free news, free summer meals, a yearbook shoutout, information about cell phone and social media use, opportunities to practice reading and math over the summer, and a long list of family-friendly and screen-free local events and activities to keep you entertained!

Smartphones & Social Media
Thinking about getting a smartphone for your child? We really hope you reconsider, and do what you can to postpone smartphone use as long as possible for your child. As a school and community, we are seeing negative impacts of smartphones and social media on our students. Cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate or disturbing content, technology addiction, and an increase in mental health related illness have all been linked to smartphone and social media use in our children.
Wait Until 8th is an organization that encourages families to wait until children are in 8th grade to purchase a smartphone for them. You can find more information about why to wait and how to do it on this link: Wait Until 8th.
If your child does have a smartphone or computer access, please take a moment to read this report on the negative impacts of social media on the mental health of children. Read the report here.
Even though your child might tell you they are the only kid without a smartphone or social media account, we promise you, they are not! Many, many families do not allow smartphones or social media use, and we hope you'll consider waiting too. Check out some screen-free local events and activities below!
