Summit Cove Elementary
Family Newsletter - September 23, 2024
Message from the Principal
Greetings, Summit Cove Community,
It's hard to believe we are already three quarters of the the way through September! How did that happen so fast? There is a lot of great learning happening at Summit Cove.
At the close of last school year, Summit Cove Elementary engaged in a collaborative strategic purpose activity with staff members, parents and community members. The outcome of this important work was the identification of three focus and goals for implementing continuous improvement action plans over the next three years. The focus areas and year one goals are explained below in this newsletter. I will include our progress in our family newsletters.
Our scheduled September SCE Literacy Night has been postponed until November. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We're very excited to plan a fun evening celebrating literacy and providing resources and ideas to help families partner with us in building strong readers and writers.
Please consider joining our amazing Summit Cove Parent Teacher Student Association! This wonderful organization does so much for our school community and you can participate in supporting our student's learning with your membership of as little as $15 per year. The grade with the highest number of parent/guardian PTSA memberships will be treated to a donut party! Check out the membership display at our school entrance to see how each grade is increasing membership!

We look forward to a wonderful year of learning, growth, and community together.

Original Works Art Fundraiser
Original Works transforms children's artwork onto individual, quality products that can be shared with family and friends. SCE talented artists are working hard to create various pieces of art. Once their art is complete, you'll receive a custom brochure and can order various products online with your students' artwork. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly towards enhancing our art program, providing new supplies, and enriching our students' creative experiences.
Summit Cove Strategic Purpose and Action Plans
In May 2024, SCE invited staff, parents and community members to participate in comprehensive strategic planning sessions. We are so grateful for the engagement of our community to develop important a strategic purpose and three focus areas with aligned goals to continue improving learning experiences and outcomes for students.
Summit Cove Strategic Purpose Statement:
At Summit Cove Elementary School, learners are empowered on their shared intellectual journey while meeting individual interests, talents and needs. We are better together with the involvement of our connected community.
Focus Areas and Year One Goals
- Intellectual Journey - Our school’s culture develops and nurtures inquiry, creativity, and wonder daily through focused efforts that support student-generated questions.
- Empowered Learners - The school develops and sustains a school-wide approach to feedback within learning cycles.
- Connected Community - Our staff intentionally designs interactive community opportunities.
All SCE staff members are part of the action team for the focus area of their choice and are developing plans to achieve the year one goals. Our Family newsletter will provide progress reports on each goal throughout the year.

Kindness at Summit Cove!
Summit Cove is pleased to include learning from the Random Acts of Kindness organization. The Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation is a small nonprofit that invests their resources into making kindness the norm. They are rooted in the belief that all people can connect through kindness and that kindness can be taught.
Our students are active participants in creating a culture of kindness at school. The framework used includes a cycle of sharing, inspiring, empowering, acting and reflecting through the following concepts:
- Respect
- Caring
- Inclusiveness
- Integrity
- Responsibility
- Courage
xSEL Labs Assessment
Summit Cove Elementary cares about your child’s ability to problem solve and understand others. Beginning this week, we will be using xSEL Labs as a tool to gather information about all children’s social and emotional skills in K-5. We will use the data to improve our teaching of these skills to your child. This year we will also be adding some additional questions to the survey that ask students about how safe and supported they feel. You can find the list of questions here. If you do not wish to have your child participate in this assessment, please contact Mr. Jurgen (Yogi) Allen at jurgen.allen@summitk12.org by September 27
