Thereʻs a New Bird in Town–Public Invited to the Unveiling and Blessing of the New Educational Kiosk featuring ʻIwa Mosaic at Diamond Head State Monument
Date: May 10, 2024
Where: Diamond Head State Monument,
When: May 17, 2024–9:00am-11:00 unveiling and blessing.
Waikīkī School students have spent the past year exploring and learning about Lēʻahi, the iconic State Monument towering above their school. Through a unique partnership with DLNRʻs Division of State Parks, the kids have developed educational signage and a lifesize ʻiwa mosaic which visitors can compare their arm span to the ʻiwaʻs 7 ½ foot wingspan.
The educational kiosk is filled with Waikiki studentʻs work. Fourth graders created signs to educate the public about native plants found in the crater. Third graders crafted the lifesize ʻiwa mosaic and accompanying educational sign. Fifth graders made an interactive educational sign showcasing local experts discussing the culture, history and plants found in the crater.
Diamond Head State Monument is open daily from 6am-6pm. Hawaii residents can enter the park free with a Hawaii Drivers license or State-issued ID. There will be extra parking available for this event.
