October 2024
Moved by Spirit and Walking in Courage
Happy October Bosco Students and Families!
What a wonderful start we have had to our school year! Our students came back to school ready to grow in their Faith, learn, strengthen themselves physically, and ready to grow socially! The “feeling” around high school has been one of happiness and one full of school spirit.
Homecoming week was full of fun! We are so proud of all the leadership that our Lighthouse team demonstrated through their organization of the week. We are also so proud of the cheerleaders who organized and led the Pep Rally on Friday. Both groups did a great job, demonstrating our word of the year “Courage” and developing skills that will serve them well now and in the future!
Next week is conference week. I would like to extend a PERSONAL INVITATION to all of you to attend parent-teacher conferences. Our opening statement in our mission is “With support from families…” and this is one of the best opportunities to come together with your student and his or her teachers to synergize and all be on the same page to support your child Spiritually, Academically, Physically, and Socially.
I wish you a blessed October and hope that you have the time to enjoy as many fall activities as you can. It is one of the best times of year!
In Christ,
Mrs. Douglas

Mama Mia on the 16th!
On Wednesday, October 16 at 6 PM in the Don Bosco gym the middle and high school choirs will be presenting their fall pops concert. Please come and support our choirs as they sing melodies from the movie Mamma Mia!
Classroom Saints
As we grow as a vibrant Catholic School, we are excited to introduce classroom saints. Each classroom will be assigned a different saint, with a wall plaque to correspond. During each school year, your child will have an opportunity to learn about their classroom saint. The hope is that the stories of these men and women will inspire the students in their own faith life. We encourage you to ask your child about their classroom saint, and have them teach you a little about them!
Eat McDonald's for Post Prom on 10/16!
20% of your purchase goes to Bosco to be directed to Post Prom when you mention "McTeacher's" at the register. We also keep 100% of sales from limited edition coupon pages ($5, sold during the event, cash only).
See you Wednesday, October 16, from 4:30-7 PM at the Waterloo LaPorte Rd store!
2025 Senior Photographs
Please be aware that 3 senior pictures need to be turned in by Tuesday, November 26. It is VERY IMPORTANT that we get their pictures by this date. In fact, the sooner, the better. This may be (but does not have to be) three different poses.
Indicate on the back of each picture the student’s name and whether the pose is for the:
- Yearbook-vertical shot
- Senior Spotlight for the Bosco Facebook page- vertical shot
- Class composite (Display in hall)- vertical shot
Please turn in your pictures to Mrs. Rottink. Vertical Shots work much better than horizontal! Sometimes horizontal has to be cropped to fit. DIGITAL images are acceptable, or you can turn in print copies. Please make sure DIGITAL images are high resolution. Digital images can be emailed to: hrottink@boscocatholic.org
Most studios already have these specifications but please make sure the picture turned in for the yearbook is vertical and is a color photo.
We cannot guarantee your senior’s picture will be included in the yearbook or the class composite if you don’t make this deadline. PLEASE make your photographer aware of the deadline. Don’t assume they know it. Often pictures that are taken in the fall have difficulty making this deadline. Please be aware of this.

National Honor Society Scholarships
NHS students partner with the Red Cross for scholarship opportunities based on the number of units that is collected over the school year. Red Cross hosts 5 drives in Gilbertville and every drop helps save lives and assist the NHS seniors in scholarship funds.
Steubenville Youth Conference
Each summer, the University of Steubenville hosts Catholic Youth Conferences across the US. There are conference locations in Minnesota and Illinois for students who are in 8th through 12th grade. If you would like more information, please fill out the interest form by October 31. If we have enough interest a parent/student information meeting will be planned. Here is a great video showcasing information on the event!

Celestial Journey
Marching band season is in full swing. The band is working on their show, titled Celestial Journey, for the halftime football games, events and competitions and the State performance. Friday, October 11, will be band night at the home football game and the full show will be performed at halftime. The next morning the band will leave for three performances. They will head to Cedar Rapids for the State performance in the morning and then travel to West Liberty and Muscatine for marching tournaments. This is a long day for the band, but it is always rewarding.
The school, parish, and local communities are invited to join the band at the Bosco football field on October 13 at 4 PM for the last performance of the season. The band and I are thankful for all the support and time that we receive from the parents, school system, and community in putting together a great show and the marching season a huge success year after year.

Sophomore Saint Fair
The parish Confirmation prep program partners with the sophomore theology class to help our students learn more about the saint they choose for their Confirmation name. Students research the saint and prepare a poster presentation. We will look forward to sharing the presentations at the 2nd Annual Saint Fair on All Saints Day with all K-9 students in the Bosco System. After Christmas the student presentations are displayed in the entrance of Immaculate Conception Church for parish members to view.
Our K-12 WIG (Wildly Important Goal) this year is, "Increase reading scores by reading more books." Look at all the books we've read! We are over half way to our first quarter goal of 1000 books. The end of the quarter is October 25, keep reading!

Youth Choir Invitation
As I've been learning to manage life in a new way, the youth choir at Immaculate Conception has been on hold. I would like to slowly start bringing that back because the kids do such a great job and our church community enjoys seeing the youth contribute to our parish in such a vibrant way. The youth choir is for any student in grades 3-12 with an interest in singing. High school students can use this time towards their service hours.
We sing at the 10 AM Mass, one or two Sundays a month. Students can come up to the front of the church by the piano when they arrive at church with their families. The youth choir schedule is shared in the school newsletters and the church bulletin. The next youth choir date is Sunday, October 6, at 10 AM.
I hope to see you there and if you have any questions, please reach out!
