Letter from the Principal
Hello EMS Families and Caregivers,
I want to start by thanking all of you for the outpouring of love and support during Teacher Appreciation Week. I can’t express enough how much all the care and attention means to all of us who work with your children every day. We felt it so clearly and it means the world!
I also want to draw your attention to the SPRING DANCE which is happening this Friday, May 17th from 6:00-7:30. We need parent volunteers to chaperone! Please consider signing up with the link provided below. All chaperones will meet me at 5:45 in the gym lobby for a run down of roles and assignments. Thanks so much for supporting these important social experiences for our kids!
Speaking of volunteering, don’t miss the EMS Volunteer Orientation Night the night before the dance on Thursday, May 16th from 5:45-6:45 in the EMS library. We will have folks on site to facilitate the background check paperwork and fingerprinting required for school-based volunteering, and there will be EMSEngage PTO members there to talk about all the opportunities to get involved in the coming year. Don’t miss it!
Lastly, I want to share that this coming week EMS will be hosting a production of “And Then They Came For Me” - this play recounts personal stories of survivors of the Holocaust, and contains some intense material. Humanities teachers will be teaching lessons provided by Burlington School District’s Offices of Equity and Teaching & Learning to prepare students with necessary context, and we will be supporting students through several rounds of reflection following the production in order to help them make meaning of what they encounter in the play. We will also have our Guidance and Student Support Staff available for students during the production should any need or wish to step out at any time. Sharing this content with EMS students is a component of BSD’s Stop the Hate campaign specifically targeting antisemitic and anti-muslim behaviors in our community.
Thank you all. I want to wish a joyful and reflective Mother’s Day to our entire community. Mother’s Day can be a day full of love and appreciation, and it can also be a day full of complicated or difficult emotions for many. My wish is for all in our community to be able to feel, celebrate, and remember the unconditional love shared between the important people in our lives. That love sustains and nurtures us as individuals, and it helps us grow a more compassionate, just, and inclusive community.
All my best,
John

5th Period Design & Technology Students build raised beds for 2nd graders at EES!
This week the students in 5th period Design & Tech. generously volunteered to build two raised bed frames for a second grade class. The students used trex decking and 2x4’s to build the beds and installed them on the hillside garden site at EES. This was a great example of kids helping kids and the DTE students walked away feeling great about using their skills to help the kids at EES.

Join us on May 16th where we will have support on site to help process all BSDVT required paperwork needed to be cleared to volunteer for chaperoning field trips, supporting students at events, volunteering in the school or after school/ sports events, etc.
We've made the process as easy as possible so you can start making a difference in our school and ensure you are approved to chaperone for the rest of your child's attendance in a Burlington school.
Please bring a photo ID like a driver's license or passport with you.
We will share information about one time, short term and long term volunteer opportunities. Come by to find out how to get involved at EMS in the coming year. If you RSVP, we can give you a 10 minute time slot so that you are in and out quickly. Or, feel free to just show up and wait for the next available opening. Measles Information
Some of you may have read that there are documented cases of measles in Vermont. Measles is a contagious, airborne disease that can cause high fever, runny nose, cough, and a rash of red spots. Measles is preventable by vaccination.
If you or your child are not vaccinated against measles, please strongly consider doing so. A person can be contagious with measles for up to 5 days before the rash appears. If an unvaccinated person is exposed to measles, they must quarantine for 21 days. If you have questions about vaccination, please speak to your healthcare provider about how you can protect yourself, your family, and your community.
BHS Transition
Thanks to BHS for hosting a wonderful information night for incoming 9th graders and their families on Wednesday! For those of you who were not able to attend or who would like to review the information presented, Here are the slides presented Wednesday evening!
Counselors' Corner
Career Counseling is an important part of Middle School. Understanding their options for High School makes the transition to BHS even more exciting! Ms. Brady and a group of 8th Grade Girls visited the Burlington Tech Center’s Vermont Works For Women Career Challenge Day!
Career Challenge Day offers girls* in grades 6-8 a supportive, empowering environment to explore all that their local tech center has to offer.
As part of Career Challenge Day, visiting students get hands-on exposure to tech programs: they meet instructors, hear from current students, and try using tools and equipment in each classroom.
Here are some pictures from our super fun day:

Upcoming
Hey parents/caregivers of sixth graders, happy spring.
At our last meeting we talked about how closely we choose to follow our kids' tracks through life, academically, socially, physically, and how we support their independence.
The next meet-up will be on Monday, May 13th at 6pm again in the EMS library. We will continue through the Five Basics of Parenting Adolescents on the MIT Raising Teens website https://hr.mit.edu/static/worklife/raising-teens/five-basics.html
with discussions focused on how we "Guide and Limit" our kids. Basically- how do we support them to develop their own competence while still working to keep them safe and on track?
As always, it doesn't matter if you haven't made it to any previous sessions- all topics are meant to stand alone and we appreciate as many new and different perspectives as we can get to enrich these conversations. Also, please feel comfortable to come and listen- there is no pressure to share.
Those of us organizing this hesitated around adding another thing to Spring’s busy calendar as many of us are feeling overwhelmed. Thus we understand if you can’t make it, but it is a nice opportunity to do something just for parents to support each other and…. There will be more home-cooked food :)
Questions? (Also, if you are interested in coming and need an interpreter, please RSVP through your cultural liaison to one of the emails below and we will do our best to arrange your interpreter).
