November Weekly Update
Week of November 20 - November 22, 2023
Principal's Message
Monday is: Day B
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It was great to see so many parents and guardians at our annual Cultural Fair last Friday. Students did an amazing job in researching, learning and sharing information about various countries and their traditions. Also, thank you to all the families that provided food for the day.
As we head into a shortened week, please note that Wednesday, November 22nd is an early release day with no lunch served. Pre-K CARES dismissal is set for 10:10 am, while grades 5-8 will be dismissed at 10:55 am. Also, please note that students in grades 5-8 will be participating in Healthy Choices/Spirit Day on Wednesday. Please note that each homeroom has been designated a team color to wear that day.
Lastly, information about our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences will be shared with all of you on Monday afternoon. Pre-K teachers will be contacting parents with meeting dates and times, while grades 5-8 will use PTCFast.com to sign-up for appointments. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, December 7th from 4:30-6:30 pm for students in grades 6-8 and grades 5-8 on Wednesday, December 13th from 12:30-2:30 pm and 4:30-6:30 pm by appointment only.
Sincerely,
Ms. Christine Barrett

Grades 5 and 6 ST Math at Home!
ST Math is a visual-spatial program that engages students in creative and rigorous problem-solving which complements our Tier I math program (Illustrative Math). Click this link for an introductory video.
Implementing ST Math is grounded in our work to provide all students with access to high-quality mathematics materials.
We invite grade 5 and 6 students to access ST Math at home and for parents to join the ST Math at-home community.
Students in grades 5 and 6 can access ST Math by logging into their Quincy Google account and clicking the Clever bookmark.
Students should work independently, but parents/guardians/caregivers can support students by engaging in math conversations. The following questions are designed to guide these discussions.
- Describe what you see on the screen.
- What have you tried to do to solve the puzzle?
- What do you think you need to do to solve the puzzle?
- Describe the strategy that you are going to try.
- What do you think will happen when you click the Go Button?
- Describe what you see after you try your strategy. Was it what you expected?
- How does this compare to what you thought would happen?
- What did you learn from the animated feedback?
- What do you know now to help you with future puzzles?
As you watch over your child's shoulder, remember that the puzzles start off simple with concrete representations and then get more challenging and abstract as they progress. If they encounter a difficult puzzle, they may ask you for your help. Utilizing the prompts listed above, you will help your student progress forward and persevere while problem-solving.

Grades 6-8 DOVE Workshops
Sixth grade students are currently participating in a workshop presented by D.O.V.E. (Domestic Violence Ended) focusing on healthy vs. unhealthy relationships during their health classes. This is a six-part series that begins in grade six and will continue during grades seven and eight. In grade six the focus is on developing healthy friendships. In grades seven and eight the program will focus more on developing healthy dating relationships, warning signs of abuse and how to support a friend or a loved one. Seventh and eighth grade workshops will begin in January and February.
DOVE has been a partner of Quincy Public Schools for many years and has provided extremely valuable trainings for both students and staff members during that time. “DOVE’s Healthy Relationship Education and Abuse Prevention Program, educates students and young adults on the complex issues of dating and relationships while supporting and empowering youth to become leaders and agents for change in their communities." Attached you will find an outline of the topics that will be discussed by grade level. If you any questions or would like more information please contact Mr. Lorenzano at michaellorenzano@quincypublicschools.com or you may also visit the DOVE website at www.dovema.org
