Girls on the Run
4th and 5th grade girls - are you ready to show the world how friendly, smart, talented and sporty you are? Join our amazing coaches for a new season of Girls on the Run! Girls on the Run® is an after school program in which we will meet as a team to become stronger emotionally, mentally and physically! At each practice, we will have important discussions and do fun activities about girl power, empowerment, problem solving skills and leadership qualities. We will also do some physical activity, like running, power walking, stretching, playing games and working out in order to train for our ultimate goal...which is to run a 5K in Chicago in May! If you’re interested, please see the attached flyer below to register and start your own Girls on the Run journey! Contact Mrs. Frank (kfrank@d75.org) with any further questions.
A Note from our Reading Teachers
Focus on Reading: Reducing Distractions, Increasing Engagement!
In today’s busy world, distractions can make it hard for 3rd–5th graders to fully engage with
reading. Adults have a hard time avoiding distractions, too! It can be challenging to find a
distraction-free space and train your body and brain to focus, but the more you practice, the easier
it becomes!
Helping children stay focused and visualize what they’re reading can improve comprehension and
make the experience more enjoyable. Help your child to create a quiet, distraction-free reading
space and set small, manageable reading goals. Teach them to visualize the story by imagining
characters, settings, and events like a movie in their minds. Encourage them to sketch or doodle
what they imagine is happening. If your child enjoys listening to books read aloud, they can try
sketching as they listen. Let them become illustrators!
Asking questions like, “What do you picture happening next?” can help them stay engaged and
think critically. With the right strategies, reading becomes more than an activity—it becomes an
immersive adventure!
If your child is reading longer texts, have them stop every 2-3 pages and talk to someone about
what has happened so far. Jotting down notes or sketches every few pages can help students
organize their thoughts and make connections to their reading. If they read a few pages and can’t
recall anything, it’s a good indication that they weren’t well focused! Tell them to try again with a set
goal of picking out information about what happened.
