PIES Views the Solar Eclipse
What a fabulous turnout of families and community members we had join us after school on April 8th to view the Great North American Solar Eclipse! After donning our eclipse safety glasses, gasps and exclamations could be heard as we waited and watched the moon and sun put on a show. Our budding astronomers learned how the moon's passage between the earth and sun fully or partially obstructs the sunlight for a short time. While we were not within the "path of totality" (now a well-known concept), students felt the sudden drop in temperature and some noticed "that the birds got quieter." Thank you, families, for participating in this amazing experience with us!

Peaks Island Fund Awards $10,000 Grant to PIES!
We are over the moon to have been awarded a grant for $10,000 from the Peaks Island Fund for what we believe will be an unprecedented schoolwide, interdisciplinary project here at PIES for the 24-25 school year. Partnering with the nonprofit organization Educational Passages, all of our PreK through grade five students will participate in its Miniboat Program so please check it out: https://educationalpassages.org/. Students will construct, personalize and prepare all components of the school’s own 5-foot, unmanned miniboat to get it ready to embark on a transatlantic voyage! Construction of the miniboat will involve students ballasting the keel, securing the keel and mast, painting the hull, designing the sail and installing a solar-powered GPS transmitter. The transmitter will send data 2-4 times daily to EP’s database that will feed into a custom page for PIES for everyone to follow. Students will track their miniboat’s voyage and analyze the data. The Illustration Institute’s Scott Nash will introduce his illustrated book series Flat Stanley about that intrepid character whose travels take him around the world. Connecting to this concept of world traveler, students will create and label 2 dimensional artworks of themselves as transatlantic voyagers during workshops with Maine children's author and illustrator Lucky Platt. Students’ 2D creations of themselves will comprise the miniboat’s “crew” that will be added with messages to the miniboat’s watertight compartment for its transatlantic voyage. Anchors away!
Penobscot Nation Performer Firefly Comes to PIES
What a treat we had having Jason Brown, also known as “Firefly,” perform at PIES on Thursday, April 25th! A music maker and tradition keeper of the Wabanaki Peoples’ Penobscot Nation who has performed at prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Firefly performed “traditional hand drum, shaker and vocal songs rooted in his ancestral traditions” that also wove in contemporary rhythms. Firefly’s engagement with our PreK – grade five audience was pretty magical as he invited everyone to clap, dance, sing and chant. Some of our students also joined Firefly on stage using traditional drums and shakers as he led them in song. Firefly’s clothing reflected traditional Wabanaki symbolism found in nature that was juxtaposed with the fluffy white jacket he wore with its flashing lights that represented more futuristic vibes. This multifaceted performance concluded with a whole school circle dance around the gym and grades two through five students playing traditional instruments as a thank you to Firefly. Very special thanks to our own music teacher extraordinaire Ms. Faith for bringing Firefly to PIES and to the many community donors who made this performance possible.
Annual ESSA Report from the Maine DOE
Portland Public Schools uses assessment data to help inform our practices at the district, school, classroom, and individual levels for our students. Each year the Maine Department of Education issues a report for each district and each school. These reports summarize state assessments and other achievement data about our students. The report also contains information about teacher qualifications. The ESSA Data Dashboard at the Maine Department of Education allows you to review report cards for schools and districts across the state. The ESSA Data Dashboard has recently been updated with information from the 2022-2023 school year.
EARTH DAY at PIES: A Staff, Family & Community Affair!
Students, staff, family and community members rolled up their sleeves and dug into the soil on a bright and sunny Earth Day morning to help prepare our school grounds for a season of healthy growth and beauty. Everyone worked together to rake leaves for composting, prune back plants for regrowth and pull up and remove some very pesky invasive species that seem to love our outdoor spaces! Using spades, shovels and grit, our students were tenacious at pulling up root systems of invasive plants that have been crowding our hyacinths, peonies and lilies, as well as encroaching on our school gardens and sports field. We were thrilled to have so many parents and grandparents join us on such a beautiful morning! Our students continue to be true environmental stewards of the island and we could not be more proud of them. Special thanks to Nyalat Biliew, Climate Action Organizer for the Sierra Club’s Maine Chapter (as well as a member of the PPS Board of Education) who joined us and provided gloves and Earth Day stickers for our students. Nyalat also joined a rollicking multi-grade soccer game and promised students she would return soon for a rematch!
So many leaves to compost . . .
