NIS June News
Principal Notes
Dear NIS Families,
As we wind down the last few weeks of the school year, I'd like to share a quote that I enjoy by Jonathan Lockwood Huie, "Celebrate endings-for they preceded new beginnings." I love that each school year allows us to do just that. As we entered June this week it is a natural time to think back on the school year and celebrate the learning, relationships, and growth that 2023/2024 has allowed. I sincerely hope that your child(ren) and you have many good memories from this year and that any challenges can be used as opportunities for future beginnings.
Personally, I feel that I can look back on my first year at NIS with much to celebrate...great students I have been able to get to know and watch grow in academic and social areas, dedicated staff members who gave much of themself to support students and each other, families that have come to events, supported their child and communicated through messages, surveys and conversations, and the amazing opportunity to explore this beautiful island of Nantucket through each of the four seasons.
But, there is also an excitement for what is ahead as well...three focused goals of the school council in response to the family survey, opportunities to build on the foundation of relationships formed this year, a new group of students entering NIS, hearing about the progress of our fifth graders as they move to the middle school, determining what went well this year and where we can grow, a focus on continuing to increase a sense of belonging for students, families and staff and a summer of rejuvenation for all.
I would encourage you to take a few minutes with your child(ren) to celebrate the highs of this past year and set goals for the upcoming one as well. I wish each student, staff and family a great ending to the year these next few weeks and a wonderful summer.
Sincerely,
Ms. Becky Janda
NIS Principal

No Birthday Food Treats Please
At NIS students are NOT ALLOWED to bring in food items to celebrate their birthday with their class. This was instituted pre-COVID due to the number of children with food allergies and due to our responsibility with promoting healthy bodies. You wouldn't believe the number of cupcakes that would come into the school each year!
We would like to encourage you to donate a birthday book to your child's classroom library in honor of their birthday. Other acceptable ideas include bringing in a special pencil or decal for everyone in the class if that's preferred.
Thank you for not sending your child to school with food items for the class to celebrate their birthday.
