KEWASKUM DISTRICT NEWS
MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR
One of the defining characteristics of the Kewaskum School District is our Kewaskum Difference. The Kewaskum Difference is:
We COMPETE in a global society by offering dual credit and college/career readiness.
We educate the WHOLE child by involving the community.
We have that SMALL TOWN FEEL with personal attention.
Over the next few months, I’d like to break down each of these three areas and what that looks like in the Kewaskum School District.
So what does it mean to compete in a global society by offering dual credit and college/career readiness? It starts in 4K when students learn their letters, shapes, and colors. Each year we challenge our students so that they can build on the essential knowledge and skills they need to be academically successful.
By the time they get to high school, they have opportunities to take dual credit courses where students can receive both high school and post-secondary (tech school, college, university) credit. We give students the same opportunities that larger school districts have to take challenging courses that give students credits at Moraine Park Technical College and the University of Wisconsin system. On our last district report card, about half (49.6%) of Kewaskum students completed at least one dual credit course, which is twice that of the Wisconsin state average.
We also offer Advanced Placement courses that allow students to take rigorous tests to earn college credit. Over 20% of students take an Advanced Placement course, and we have a passing rate of over 60%. This has saved our students and parents tens of thousands of dollars each year in college tuition costs.
Finally, we have rigorous academic and career planning lessons for all grade levels and a large work-based learning program. On our last district report card, we had 96 students (16.9%) who participated in a work-based learning program. This is twice the percentage of the Wisconsin state average, and it is the largest percentage of participating students of all the K-12 Washington County districts. On top of that, many of our students earn industry-recognized credentials, which gives them a great leg up in landing well-paid positions in local industries.
Although we are a smaller school district compared to others in the county, we are able to offer our students the same opportunities to earn college credit, gain important work-based learning experiences, and receive industry-recognized credentials so that they are ready to compete both in our community and the world.
