Frayne Today
News & Updates K-12 | School Holidays| 01/10/2024
Principal's Welcome
DEAR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, STUDENTS & STAFF
Welcome to this bumper and newsy issue of Frayne Today. It is out a little later than expected due to the large amount of activity to be celebrated.
Term 3 certainly finished with a flurry of exciting activity. An official Playground Opening, Athletics Carnivals, Frayne Days and special Year 12 graduation events highlighted what was a special couple of weeks at the College.
It was special to experience my first Frayne Days. Liturgies, celebrations, fun activities, fund raising events and student performances which all played a part to make the days special. It was also nice to host special guests for both Frayne Day celebrations. Three Mercy sisters including Sr Pauline and Sr Dolores shared Mass with both our Primary and Secondary students. At Duncan Street our students gave the sisters a standing ovation as we shared a little of their story.
Our Year 12 students began their Graduation Time. Four key events marked the beginning of our celebrations for our Year 12 students. The Graduation Mass, a shared Thank You Staff morning tea, the sealing of the time capsule and running of our first Year 12 Legacy Event ensured our Year 12 farewell celebrations began in style. Congratulations to McAuley House for being the inaugural winners of the Year 12 Legacy Event.
COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING
Mr Richard Miles has provided the following summary from the recent Advisory Council meeting:
College Advisory Council update
The College Advisory Council met on Tuesday 17 September 2024. The Principal briefed the Advisory Council on some of the wonderful initiatives that are being put in place, reflecting considered thought and action by the leadership team.
There have been changes to the way the significant milestone of Y12 graduation is being celebrated.
We are seeing the introduction of a pilot program associated with a partnership with the AMA that will reap benefits for the participants and the wider community for years to come.
UFCC is one of 8 schools that have been selected for an AI in education pilot program that will support our teachers by helping to reduce their admin workloads.
The exciting (and challenging) process of ‘naming’ that is underway was a focus of discussion too: much consideration and discernment is being brought to bear in naming UFCC campuses, houses and ‘places’.
The Council was also briefed on the amazing work that Friends of Frayne continues to undertake in providing hospitality to the many events across the breadth of the College.
Finally, the aim of developing and putting in place a balanced budget for UFCC for 2025 is being achieved.
PRIMARY SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TERM 4
Miss Sabrina D'Cruze will take long service leave in Term 4. For Term 4 we will run a slightly different leadership structure. Mr Andy Dalton will take on a Head of Primary K-6 role. In this role Mr Dalton will have leadership oversight of all primary school years. Mr Dalton will be supported by Miss Sabrina Del Rosso in the role of Acting Assistant Head of Primary (Junior School) and Mrs Julia Horgan will provide leadership support in the role of Assistant Head of Primary (Preparatory School).
COLLEGE ENHANCEMENTS
Over the holiday period six general classrooms on the Duncan Street campus will be refurbished, along with the College Library. These refurbishments are part of phase two of the reFRESH Frayne project.
Thank you to our Friends of Frayne for the continued support of College events and funding of various College initiatives. Last week we celebrated the official opening and blessing of the new primary school play equipment. It was a joyous occasion, where we had time to reflect on the importance of play activities in the lives of children. Fr Nick provided a special blessing for the equipment and Friends of Frayne chair, Mrs Nikki Middleton, cut the red ribbon to signify the official opening of the playground.
HOUSE REVIEW AND NAMING OF CAMPUSES K-12
Discussions have continued around the naming of Houses and Campuses as we move through the process of introducing a K-12 House structure at the College. Decisions will be made as to the naming of the College's two campuses and six houses. This is an exciting time in the College history as it introduces a reviewed house structure to meet the needs of our students.
THREE YEAR OLD KINDY
The college has received endorsement from Catholic Education Western Australia to proceed with an application to the Department of Education to introduce a three year old Kindy to Ursula Frayne Catholic College. A response to our application will take six weeks. Our aim is for the first cohort of students to begin in Semester 2, 2025.
AUSTRALIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AMA) PARTNERSHIP
I am excited to update that the College has collaborated with AMA to introduce a medical industry pathway. This partnership will provide students the opportunity to study a Certificate IV at the College. 26 students have enrolled for the pilot program to be conducted during Term 4. AMA will work with the College to set up a simulation lab at the College. We will be the first Catholic school to facilitate such a course on site presenting a unique opportunity for any student with a passion to pursue careers in the medical field.
I hope our students and staff have had time to rest a little over the holiday period and I look forward to concluding our year with a very exciting term four ahead of us.

PRENDIVILLE CATHOLIC COLLEGE VISIT
On Friday 30 August, Warren Miller, students and staff from Prendiville Catholic College came to visit us on the Duncan Campus.
They brought along some items made in their Unique By Endeavour enterprise class, which they set up in the staffroom for a pop-up shop during recess. Their shop included glass coasters, delicious smelling candles, chopping boards, printed t-shirts and more.
But most of the excitement from their visit centered around them bringing their therapy dog, Nellie, who visited some classes and made for lots of happy faces.
Interactions like these between Catholic Colleges continue to strengthen our education systems, broaden our horizons and provide valuable insight into new and different ways of doing things. We thank Warren, staff and students for coming out to spend time with us and to Nellie, for brightening up our day!
JUNIOR SCHOOL EQUIPMENT REFRESH
Games include: table tennis, Jenga, Connect Four, Snakes and Ladders, Twister, chess, checkers, quoits, bean-bag toss and dominoes.
They have already been well used and students are enjoying learning how to play. Let the fun times continue!

PREPARATORY SCHOOL SPORTS CARNIVAL
It was reaffirming to witness another example of a positive home-school partnership in action with the presence of so many parents, grandparents and family members at our Sports Carnival on Friday 6 September. Given the need for a change of date, your support by attending was valued and appreciated by your children as well as all other stakeholders in our College community. After the weather initially tested our decision to go ahead with the Sports day, we were blessed to enjoy more pleasant conditions for the rest of this outdoor time. It is always rewarding to watch our students from Kindergarten to Year 2 showcase their athletic ability and acquired Physical Education skills by doing their best and having a go!
The upbeat faction entrances, followed by our Kindy races made for a heart-warming start to the day. A sense of ‘community’ was felt with families enjoying a picnic lunch under gazebos and the trees at Fraser Park at the end of the Carnival.
The cheering was led by our mature and responsible Year 6 Faction Captains who were ably backed by our enthusiastic Year 2 Mini-Faction Captains. Barracking for one’s team certainly adds to the fun element and sporting spirit we endeavour to capture on the day. Congratulations to Gold for claiming the ‘Best Cheering’ certificate.
All the children in the Preparatory School should feel proud of their terrific efforts and outstanding behaviour. It made the decision to choose the ‘Best Behaved’ Faction very hard for our judges. However, Blue faction were the recipients of this Award. Well done also to Green for being selected as having the ‘Tidiest’ Faction bay.
There are so many people to thank whose hard work and contribution enabled the day to be a success:
- Mr Son Nguy for training the students for their events and for his overall organisation.
- The Preparatory School staff for their collaboration and support, particularly in practicing the team games with their classes.
- Mrs Denholm for being our very precise points scorer and for her many ‘behind the scenes’ administration duties in preparation for the day.
- The Grounds staff from both campuses for preparing the track and for the set up/pack away of the bays and other equipment.
- Mrs Aimee Hamer from the Friends of Frayne for having to find another Coffee Van and Food Truck at short notice.
- The team of dads who took on the role of ‘place judges’ for the individual events and helped with the morning set-up: Daniel Broughton, Dan Riggs, Andres Vivanco, Scott Ward and Yemane Asgedom.
We were all greatly impressed by the endearing speeches given by all Captains and Mini-Faction Captains as the results were revealed. The lead changed a few times during the course of the day with an eventual 95-point difference between 1st and 2nd place … but in the end our overall points winner was Red Faction, who were then presented with a trophy by our specially selected grandparent, Mrs Jenny Walsgott.
The final scores were:
Red (Catherine McAuley) - 1205 points
Gold (Clare Buggy) - 1110 points
Green (John Bosco) - 1080 points
Blue (Edmund Rice) - 900 points
Well done everyone. A real team effort!

JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS CARNIVAL
The Junior School Faction Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 13 September at Ern Clark Athletics Centre. It was a fantastic day, with a huge turn out from parents and friends who came to watch and support their children and favourite faction. I would like to say a big "Thank You" to all the year level teachers and education assistants for doing a wonderful job throughout the day; to Mr Barker, Mr Daylight and Mr Dalton for setting up in the morning; to Mrs Denholm for all of her assistance throughout the carnival; to the parents who assisted on the day, Ms Gordon-Velle, Mrs and Mr Szigligeti, Mr Whitehouse, Mr Ewert, Mrs Nash, Mr Healy; and to our Duncan Street students for volunteering with the field events.

BALMORAL CAMPUS PLAYGROUND OPENING
It was a privilege for some of the Friends of Frayne Council and Balmoral Campus parents to join members of the College Leadership Team, Father Nicholas, and Preparatory School students and staff to bless and officially open the new playground equipment in the Lower Grass Playground at Balmoral Campus.
On behalf of our parent community, Friends of Frayne have been very happy to support this playground coming to life, for it to continue to be a much loved space for Preparatory School students to play, keep active and have lots of fun with friends.

YEAR 12 LEGACY EVENT, STAFF THANK YOU MORNING TEA AND TIME CAPSULE
The inaugural Year 12 Legacy Event was held on Tuesday 16 September on the astro turf at the Duncan Campus. Students competed against each other in an Inter-House "Amazing Race" style event where they had to use their skills, smarts and super athleticism to work together as a group. It was amazing to see their enthusiasm and effort to compete to the best of their abilities. Many thanks go to Mr Bubalo, Mr Rowe and Ms Irving for coordinating and conducting the event.
The following day, our Year 12 cohort invited Duncan Campus staff to a Thank You Morning Tea, held out in the Mercy Gardens. It was a sight to behold, with so much delicious food provided to our staff by the wonderful Year 12's. To conclude the Morning Tea, Mr Antulov gave a short speech, before our helpful grounds staff lowered the Year 12 Time Capsule into it's special place in the Mercy Garden walkway. In 20 years we'll all be able to see what they all had to say!
FRAYNE DAYS
Balmoral Campus
The sun was shining on the Balmoral Campus while students and staff alike enjoyed Frayne Day.
Frayne Day is a celebration of our College and an opportunity to recognise the work of Mother Ursula Frayne and the Mercy Sisters. The Mercy Sisters, their role in starting the College and the work they continue to do in the community were a key focus for this year’s Frayne Day.
In support of the Sisters of Mercy everyone was encouraged to make a gold coin donation to support the Sisters agency Mercy Works that provides assistance in Australia and Papua New Guinea in the areas of education, health care and social welfare.
The day began with Mass, then classes focused on Mercy Works, followed by fun activities throughout the College, delicious lunches (in part thanks to Friends of Frayne) and finally an amazing concert showcase where everyone got to enjoy the talented student acts.
Duncan Campus
It was another sunny day for everyone to enjoy Frayne Day Part Two on the Duncan Campus!
Everyone was welcomed with a beautiful Mass, including some of the Sisters of Mercy, who for the second time in a week joined our College in celebration.
After Mass, the activities kicked off with laser tag, a Vinnies Op Shop, haunted house, silent disco and much more to keep everyone entertained. On the big stage though was the amazing "Care by Sharing Your Hair", led by Year 12 student Wesley West, who helped the push to raise over $25,000 for Canteen this year! Thank you to all parents who helped cut, shave and style our students at this event.
We were joined by some amazing food offerings with the trucks Smokr, Taco Daddy, Greek Streets, Baolicious, Chips on a Stick, Mr Aussie Whip and Hot Jam Donuts all in attendance.
There was also the amazing Teen Choice Awards Slime event where Mr Rowe, Mr Hoskins, Mrs Goodhew and Mr Coelho all wore some amazingly colourful slime for the sake of charity. All proceeds for this event and many others throughout the day will go to Mercy Works.
Of course, Frayne Day isn't Frayne Day without seeing the exceptional talents of our students on the big stage concert at the end of the day. Dancing, singing, drama, bands, and both the Education Support dance and Year 12 send-off act were all massive hits.
Thank you to all students, staff and parents who helped make both Frayne Days this year such a success!
