K - 3 Literacy Event
Our Literacy event was for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This is the third annual Literacy Event we have held in Rothsay. We have held the event as a Family Fun with Literacy the previous two years in the evening, so that parents can bring and engage in literacy with their children. It is meant to help foster a love of reading and promote the importance of literacy in the primary grades.
To get the event started, I read the story, while dressed in character, "There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow!", by Lucille Colandro. I really enjoy reading her "Old Lady who Swallowed a..." stories with children because they are repetitive in nature and students naturally chime in and interact with the story. Students get really excited when they are able to "read along"! Once students had heard the story, in keeping with the "snow" theme, they made and decorated their own snowflakes.
They were also able to participate in a mini-carnival in the performance gym, rotating through several games. At the end of the day students completed a “There Was a Cold Lady” activity to help retell the story to parents. They made a paper bag with the face of the “Cold Lady”. An opening was made for the “Cold Lady’s” mouth so students could place pictures of the items inside that she “swallows” throughout the story.
All students received their own book to bring home and read with their parents. This provides great opportunity for parents and students to interact with one another, and helps promote the importance of literacy within the home, as well as at school.
Congratulations to our FFA Wildlife Team! They placed 1st to qualify for state with team members: Curtis placed 2nd, Mavyn placed 4th, Cory placed 5th, Ben placed 6th, & Casey placed 21st individually. They rocked it on Wednesday!
Student Teacher
Mrs. Olson in Ag Department is hosting a student teacher this semester. Lily Krona is a student at U of M Crookston, majoring in Agriculture Education. Lily is originally from Bemidji. Welcome to Rothsay School!
Fill The Bill!!
Every year the Rothsay Boys and Girls Basketball teams hold an event to help raise funds for the Bill and Dar Rose Scholarship and to honor the memory of longtime Rothsay Tiger Bill Rose. This year's event will take place on Thursday (1-30-25) during the Girls home game against CGB. The B Team will play at 6:00pm and the Varsity will play at 7:15pm. It is our hope that we can fill the entire Bill Rose Gymnasium with fans and lots of positive energy for this important night. Please plan on coming out to cheer on the Tigers and honor the memory of Bill Rose.
Parents and Guardians,
Our school will be hosting the Minnesota School Sealant Program, where your child has the opportunity to receive FREE or reduced cost preventive dental services at school. A licensed dental professional will be offering sealants, cleanings, and fluoride varnishes to students.
The School Sealant Program will be happening on:
Friday, February 28th for grades PreK-12.
In order to be eligible to receive these services, you need to fill out a consent form with your child's information and return it to school.
The consent form is due by: Friday, January 31th.
If you have any kind of dental insurance, these services are completely FREE to you. We submit the procedures to your insurance and donate whatever portion they do not cover. If you do not have dental insurance, your child can receive these services at 70% off the usual rates.
Dental sealants, fluoride varnishes, and teeth cleanings are often provided in a public health setting due to the amazing benefits they provide at a low cost. Your child will be kept comfortable throughout these easy preventive dental services. The entire process takes less than 15 minutes. They even get to see the tooth fairy that travels with our program!
You can read more information on School Sealant Programs from the CDC and the Minnesota Department of Health at the following links.
https://www.health.state.mn.us/people/oralhealth/programs/sealants.html
https://www.cdc.gov/oralhealth/dental_sealant_program/school-sealant-programs.htm
Your student is encouraged to participate in this annual program every year. If your student was seen last year, this will allow the MN School Sealant Program to provide a cleaning and fluoride varnish which we recommended once every 6 months for kids. Sealants only need to be placed once for each adult molar tooth. If there is a new adult tooth erupted that needs a sealant, it will be placed. Please check all three boxes on the consent form for optimal oral health.
Please complete this consent form today ,www.schoolsealants.com/consentform, to make sure your child will be able to benefit from this great program.
If you are able, we prefer that you fill out the consent form online. This helps us process things quicker and more efficiently so we can help serve more students in our state that need these services. Otherwise, please complete the paper consent form that your student will bring home and return it to school to make sure your child will be able to benefit from this great program.
Please note that this program is at our school for a limited time and they have many children to help. Checking the boxes on the consent form authorizes them to perform those services, but DOES NOT GUARANTEE they will be completed. The dental professionals provide services as time allows. They will only submit the services that they are able to complete to your insurance. Please note that if you have insurance, the procedures we provide will affect your frequency limitations for those specific dental codes for when you next see your dentist. Please inform your dentist of what procedures were provided and the date so that they can keep you informed on your insurance coverage. For example, if we provide a cleaning for your child, most insurances will not cover another cleaning for 6 months. You just need to inform your dentist so they can do the appropriate procedures and not duplicate services as they may not be covered.
Please allow the MN School Sealant Program 2-6 weeks for processing all the paperwork after the program is complete. They will send you an email in 2-6 weeks with the results of your student's oral health screening, what procedures were completed and recommendations for follow up care with a dentist. If you want more information about this program, please visitwww.schoolsealants.com.
