Hump Day Happenings

This newsletter is a weekly publication available every Wednesday to our Kilgour community. If you have information to share with our school community, including upcoming events and activities please email details to RC1 by 4pm on Mondays.

After 3 months of rehearsals before school, last week was finally Showtime for our amazing actors. The performers put on 3 Ah-Mazing shows for the Kilgour community. Like all great theater there were funny moments, jaw-dropping moments and every emotion in between. I can still see Charlie (Madeline Benoit) dancing around singing "I got a golden ticket!" I crack up at the confused look on Ms. Teavee's (Greta Verkamp) face when Mike Teavee (Grayson Isenberg) shrank to 6 inches after diving into Willy's (William Crone) TV. I'm still afraid of what happened to Veruca Salt (Priya Bannerjee) and Mr. Salt (Gage Ruebel) once they went down the slide after another one of Veruca's bratty kid tantrums. I can't forget the wittiness of Grandpa Joe (Ellis Klump-Lawson) or gum chomping spirit of Violet Beauregarde (Violet Haunschild). There were so many memorable moments from a memorable cast. The Kilgour community is very proud of each performer and the commitment they made to putting on a great show... 3 times.

Mrs. Egan's 1st grade class shared that the play was great, sweet, chocolaty, amazing, funny, awesome, fun. They could have went on all day about the play. Let's just say they loved it.

If you're reading this and your student was part of the production please give them another round of applause from all of us at Kilgour. We're so in awe of their talents and effort during their rehearsals and performances. Well done!!!

Kilgour would also like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the parent volunteers that stepped in to control the lights, take tickets, crowd control, wrangle the talent backstage, take pictures, move props, essentially do whatever needed to be done and above all else SHOWED UP and made sure your students SHOWED UP.

Be sure to join the CPS State of the School's Event on Thursday, Nov. 9 to cheer on our very own, Hannah Plattner. Ms. Plattner is being recognized for the excellent work she did with students last year in Science. Kilgour's 22/23 5th graders scored the highest of all 5th graders in the district on the Science OST last Spring. Details are below on attending the State of the Schools address. Our 1st Book Fair of the year is upon us. It's slated to open for students next Monday, 11/13. In order to make it a successful event Mr. O. needs volunteers. Please access the signup genius here to volunteer.

Cincinnati Public Schools participates in a High School Lottery process for 7th grade (considered high school) placements. This high school lottery allows students to have more say in their high school experience by choosing a placement from anywhere in the district. This application is open December 1, 2023 until March 1, 2024.

As a current 6th grader you have several tasks to consider:

1. Research different high school options.
2. Schedule shadow experiences, school tours & attend information sessions. Information can be found here (and is updated as more information becomes available, including each school included in the lottery process).
3. Complete the online high school lottery application before December 1, 2023 until March 1, 2024.

From the district: "In an effort to streamline CPS’ registration and enrollment process, prepare for the new digital application process, all in-district CPS Lotteries will now be held December 1, 2023 through March 1, 2024. This includes sibling applications, magnet and high school lotteries. We understand some families may need to submit a paper application. If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact Customer Care at 513-363-0123. All in-district CPS lotteries will now run December 1, 2023 through March 1, 2024. The Fresh Fruit and Veggie Program started at back in September and will run through the end of the year.

This is a CPS program that allows each student to taste fresh fruits and veggies as well as learn facts about the day's selection. Be sure to ask your students about the program and whether they've tried something new at school.

The Cincinnati Tennis Foundation recently spent 4 weeks at Kilgour teaching tennis and pickleball during Mr. Rowlette's PE classes. They loved being part of our school community!

As part of their partnership with Kilgour, they want to make sure that any student that would like to learn and play with CTF has an opportunity. The CTF is fortunate enough to be able to play their indoor season this winter at Walnut's new indoor tennis facility. This spring they will move back outside to their home courts at Withrow.

Cincinnati Tennis Foundation is committed to providing tennis and education to all. They offer scholarships for all their programs. In addition, they have upcoming Free try day on Dec 9th. Try Tennis registration link.

My name is Andrea Johnson; I currently have a 6th grade daughter at Kilgour (my son is now in the 7th grade at Walnut Hills High School). I've been running the annual Holiday Fair for Kilgour since my son was in Kindergarten or 1st grade (I've lost track) and am really excited to announce that our 2023 Holiday Fair will be held on THURSDAY DECEMBER 7 and FRIDAY DECEMBER 8 this year. For those who are new to Kilgour or new to the Holiday Fair, the event is a two-day shopping extravaganza, held in our Kilgour Gym. Our children will visit the shop for a scheduled 20-30 minute time period on one of the two days above; if they've brought money with them to school that day, they are invited to shop for their family members, friends, and pets.

We need LOTS of volunteers for these days: please consider signing up for a shift if you can.

KSB would like to congratulate former Kilgour Mustangs that have made the middle school basketball team at their new schools.

With school closed for Veteran's Day all before and afterschool activities are also cancelled. Be sure to thank a Veteran and their family for their service and the protection of our freedoms.

Champions will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 10th in observance of Veteran's Day.

Champions full day/winter break camp dates: Nov. 22 there is a sign up for a full day program on the champions table - Champions must have at minimum, 25 kids attend in order to run that day. Winter break dates: Dec 18, 19, 20, 27, 28, 29 - Sign-ups for this break camp is online in your parent portal - you should go to enroll and you'll see winter break. You can call customer service to assist you with enrollment.

Cost: $39.00 per day per child

Children must have a packed lunch daily- I am not authorized to serve lunch (lunch is at 1130)

Champions will provide breakfast snack (8:30-9) and afternoon snack(2:45/3)

Children can bring in a personal electronic device. They are allowed to use them for 30 minutes once a day, after their reading time after lunch. It's okay if they don't bring them either. This isn't a requirement

Champions will have activities planned daily. Operating hours are 7am-6pm.

We are hoping to provide teacher treats again for the teachers at least once a month! There are 3 sign ups for each day. PLEASE indicate what you are bringing so the other people can plan accordingly. It can be bagels, muffins, or something for breakfast. It can also be something for later in the day... trail mix, chips, other treats. Each person can plan to provide something for 20-25 people so you aren't bringing in something for the whole staff. Sign up with friends and make it a group thing!

Reminders were sent by our Art teacher, Ms. McMullen via TalkingPoints. NOW we need parents to help us get to 100% and check that they have identified their student on Artsonia.
