The 8th Grade BBQ is Next Weekend (9/14)
The tradition of the 8th grade BBQ is back! This year's BBQ will take place on the Deal Field on Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is a fun, easy event and a great way to build relationships with students and families early in the school year. All 8th grade students, families, and teachers are encouraged to join, even if it's just a quick roll-through on your way to brunch, soccer games, or however else you plan to spend the weekend. This should be fun and easy for everyone!
We need your help! If you are able to support by volunteering, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040449A8AC23A2FD0-50439912-2024
Our goal is for every 8th grade student to join, so please add this easy, fun event to your calendar. We look forward to meeting you soon!
8th Grade Student Council Elections
Student council elections are coming soon! Students will learn more about the student council election process in their Individuals & Societies (history) class next week. All students interested in running for office should plan to attend an interest meeting in Mr. Boyd's room (W305) at 3:25 PM on Monday, September 16th.
This Week in Academics on Team Kendrick
Ms. Thompson: Science
Last week in science (9/3-9/6), we differentiated between observations and inferences as well as independent and dependent variables. I was able to spend time observing student work habits and pacing within the classroom. Over the next week, I will adjust the class pace to fit the needs of the students.
Within the next 5 days, the following grades will be entered into Aspen:
Syllabus turn-in
Scientific Method Sub Work (8/30)
The Boy In the Water (Observations Vs Inferences)
Identifying the Independent and Dependent Variables
Writing a Testable Question and Hypothesis
Each grade will be placed in the participation category (10%)
Next week:
Monday (9/9) students will review examples of testable questions and hypotheses. Then, students will learn the acronym DRYMIX: dependent variable, responding variable, y-axis, manipulated variable, independent variable, x-axis. There will be homework on Monday evening: practicing DRYMIX
Tuesday (9/10) review DRYMIX homework. Then, we will begin the "Penny Drop Lab".
Wednesday (9/11) students will learn how to calculate "Best Value". There will be homework on Thursday evening: Practicing Best Value
Thursday (9/12) Review best value homework, begin IB Formative on Best Value (Mean without Outlier).
Frisday (9/13) Review concepts from Best Value formative, reteach, if necessary. Study for IB Formative on IV/DV, Fair Test and Hypothesis
The homework is to bring back 2 forms:
- Student technology agreement form. (This goes to the homeroom teacher.)
What is needed for my class:
EVERYDAY: Pens/pencils (I have no preference of color or type of pen or pencil), composition notebook
- HAVE READY IN YOUR LOCKER: Ruler, calculator, colored pencils
Ms. Walters: History
This past week students were able to take their BOY history diagnostic. Students were then able to share important events of their lives by completing a personal timeline. Students ended the week with an introduction to our first unit by talking about how they would define successful societies. Finally, students dove into content and explored various Native American tribes and their culture.
- Monday: Finish Native American Annotations & Notes
- Tuesday: Motivation for European Explorations
- Wednesday: European & Native American Interactions
- Thursday: African Societies
- Friday: Columbian Exchange & Triangular Trade
Ms. Cunha: English
This week in ELA we launched unit 1: Dreaming in America through a study of the "American Dream". Students explored various interpretations of this idea and the limitations to attaining it. Next week, students will begin reading A Raisin in the Sun. We will begin the week by analyzing the opening scene to get an idea of the play's setting. Students will also be introduced to narrative techniques as they prepare for their first formative assessment on 9/19. We will end the week by taking our Beginning of Year reading assessment: MAP Growth. This new test will provide additional data points to get a better understanding of each student's unique reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skillset.
Reminders:
It is recommended that students purchase a copy of "A Raisin in the Sun" to use both in class and at home. See link below for the correct version of the text to purchase.

Summer Reading assignments can be submitted in class or via email (catherine.cunha@k12.dc.gov) before September 20th, to earn credit.
Ms. Anderson: Math
Algebra 1
This past week in Algebra 1, students worked on writing equations and exploring the definition of a solution to an equation. This coming week students will take their MAP diagnostic test. Afterwards we will continue exploring unit 2 from our curriculum. A link to our current unit can be found here.
Math 8
This past week in math class, Math 8 students explored rigid transformations and took a quiz on Friday about those topics. Kids learned how to use patty paper to perform and prove rotations and reflections. This coming week students will take their iReady diagnostic test and afterwards they will begin working on sequences of transformations. A link to our current unit can be found here.
Remind
It is very important that you and/or your student subscribe to my Remind Alerts. I will be sending out a message sometime on Monday reminding kids to bring pencil, paper and a notebook to class. Remind is how I communicate information to students about their homework. Notices go directly to their phone and are mainly received through a text message (or the app if you download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store). At times I will also attach the assignment in Remind as well. The other useful quality of Remind is that students can ask questions through the app about their homework. These questions go straight to me, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking a "dumb question". Most of the time students just need a quick point in the right direction to finish their homework.
If you are not currently receiving Remind notices from me (I've sent several), please make sure you join the correct class by clicking on the link below. You can sign up to receive messages through email, or as text messages through your phone.
