Specialists Highlights
Art
This trimester, First grade students are exploring how artists use shapes and forms in their work. They combined geometric and freeform/abstract shapes to create a unique robot. Students learned about how a blending stump can be used to smudge pencil lines and create a metallic effect on their paper; they used paint sticks to create a color, patterned background to contrast the robot. Ask your child what shapes they used in theirs!
Core
Grades 2-5 are still working on coding. We are working on projects to sharpen their skills with coding. Learning new things and codes they might not have used before.
In kindergarten we just started the Scratch Jr. app. This is a very simplified version of Scratch. They are having a lot of fun learning the different pieces. We will start doing some simple coding soon.
First grade is taking a quick break from coding to do a small unit on community workers. We are talking about the different people who work for our community. After this short unit, we will get back into coding.
Explorations
🌟 Kindergarten – Marble Run Engineers & Be Prepared
Our young engineers are wrapping up their exploration of motion with their final marble run designs! At the end of March, we’ll transition into our "Be Prepared" unit, where students will learn how different types of weather impact us and how we can stay safe during storms.
🦁 First Grade – Animal Reporters
First graders are continuing their journey as Animal Reporters! This month, we’ll dive deeper into how animals communicate through sounds and body language to survive in their environments.
🌋 Second Grade – Save the Island & A Garden for Life
Students are working on their final solutions to "Save the Island" by exploring ways to prepare for and adapt to natural changes in landscapes. Next, we’ll transition into "A Garden for Life," where students will discover how different habitats and biomes support various plants and animals around the world.
⛈️ Third Grade – Weather Warning HQ
Our young meteorologists are continuing to analyze weather patterns, with a focus this month on lightning and wildfires. Students will investigate how these extreme weather events occur and their impact on the world.
🗺️ Fourth Grade – Geographical Investigations
Fourth graders are continuing their geographical research by exploring how location influences decisions, such as where to build farms, markets, and other important structures. Students will analyze maps and case studies to understand the reasoning behind these choices.
🇺🇸 Fifth Grade – The American Revolution
Fifth graders are continuing their study of the American Revolution! This month, we’ll examine key events like the Boston Tea Party and the battles of Lexington and Concord, discussing how these moments shaped the path to independence.
Library
I Love to Read Month has been a lot of fun! In the library, we celebrated with read-alouds, reading with friends, and a bookmark contest. We also had a lot of fun celebrating reading with our Scholastic Book Fair! Funds earned from the book fair will help us to purchase books and makerspace items for the library, and books for our Dayton students! Thank you for your support!
During the month of March, students in grades K-2 will wrap up their Star of the North read-alouds and vote for their favorite one! Students in grades 3-5 have had the opportunity to read chapter books for the Maud Hart Lovelace book award. If they have read at least 3 books, they will vote. Students who read at least 9 or 10 and complete book reflections will earn an invite to our pizza party celebration.
Music
February was a busy month for Dayton students in music. Kindergarten and first grade students have been practicing new rhythms and playing many different instruments. Both kindergarten and first grade have also been learning a dance. Kindergarten students just learned the Polka, and the first graders learned a circle dance set to the lullabye, Star Light Star Bright. Second and third grade students have started to learn multi-part songs on the xylophone where two different groups play in harmony together and will soon begin composing their own music to play on the xylophones. Fourth and Fifth grade students are still working hard on practicing the recorder.
Reminder that all fourth grade students have a concert on May 13 at 7:00PM. A daytime concert will also be held at 2:30PM for any families that cannot attend the evening performance. Please call or email me if you have any questions about the concert.
PE
Happy Spring Break! After break, in Physical Education we will spend the last few weeks of March working on nutrition, food choices, and groups. Including nutrition vocabulary and food labels for the older grades. Go to MyPlate.gov for fun activities to do at home.
