The Lion's Share
April 2024
From the Principal . . .
Our return from spring break has been great. We have enjoyed hearing about everyone's travels and fun that our students had as they spent time with family and friends. Our teachers and staff have had time to relax and re-energize for the last quarter of the school year. This school year is flying by and this quarter will be packed full of learning and fun. We are currently in the midst of state testing. We appreciate your support to ensure students arrive rested after eating a good breakfast and are on time each day. We know our students will do their best and show everything they have learned.
Thank you to everyone who came to our Accelerated Program interest meeting. We are looking forward to having this new program at our school. If you have questions about accelerated classrooms for next year, please talk to your child's teacher and feel free to call or email me, as I would be happy to answer questions.
We have many family events coming up this quarter which we will highlight below. Thank you for trusting us with your children each day.
Thanks,
Andrea Emerick
Principal
Solar Eclipse Guidelines for GPS
March 28, 2024
Dear GPS Families,
As many of you are aware, a solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. The eclipse will be visible in the Phoenix Metropolitan area between 10:08am to 12:35pm. The eclipse will be most pronounced at approximately 11:20am. All elementary (preschool through 6th grade) students will remain inside for recess and PE classes during this time.
Looking directly into the eclipse can cause permanent damage to the eyes if the eclipse is viewed without proper protection and safeguards. Although there is eyewear for these purposes, the District will not be providing any; however, some school PTSO’s or other organizations may be supporting a specific campus with such devices. Some classes will have learning activities outdoors during the solar eclipse window. If so, individual schools and teachers will be providing activity details and times.
Even with reminders, some students might not be able to resist looking at the solar eclipse for a prolonged amount of time, and we want you to be aware of the potential risk(s). If you wish for your child to not participate in the optional outside activity, please contact your child’s teacher, and your child will participate in an alternative activity indoors. We take the safety of our students seriously and want parents to have the information they need to make an informed decision.
Many classrooms will be showing the solar eclipse live via streaming websites. NASA will be streaming the event. For more information, you may go to: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/live/
If you have any questions, contact your child’s teacher or school administration. As always, we thank you for choosing Gilbert Public Schools.
Respectfully,
Jason Martin, Ed.D
