Superintendent's Message
Dear Oberlin School Families,
It’s hard to believe we are heading into Thanksgiving break soon! As a reminder, there will be no school starting Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Nov. 29, 2024. School will resume on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024.
EASTWOOD PROPERTY UPDATE
In collaboration with the City of Oberlin and the Oberlin Community Land Trust concerning the Eastwood property, the Board of Education decided during its meeting on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, to postpone the auction of the property until spring 2025. This decision allows time to consider a potential rezoning for alternative uses.
WINTER WEATHER POLICY
As we head into the winter months, now is a good time to review the Winter Weather Policy.
Our District has been preparing for the inclement weather by purchasing salt, servicing our equipment, and preparing our vehicles. However, the North Eastern Ohio unpredictable weather will still require the District to cancel school periodically. Canceling school is a tough decision for Superintendents. The decision to close school impacts our students, parents and our community. So, the decision is made very carefully and is made based on many factors. Below I have listed some of the factors:
The District monitors the weather locally, regionally, and nationally. We monitor the weather for climate patterns, precipitation, and wind chill.
The Superintendent or an administrator will drive our District roads as early as 3:00 a.m. if necessary. This allows us first-hand experience of road conditions specific to Oberlin. One-third of our students ride the school bus each day and many students walk to school, so severe weather and road conditions impact school safety.
The District maintains close communication with all county and local Superintendents. We provide each other with information regarding additional weather conditions influencing our bordering school lines.
Oberlin City Schools will provide our school community with as much notice as possible when the decision is made to close school.
The District will utilize the following media sources to notify our school community of a closing or delay:

WITS in LMS
LMS 6th grade students had the opportunity to work closely with Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Ms. Elizabeth Rogers and college students.
Often referred to as the “WITS” program, it is a collaboration between Oberlin City School District and Oberlin College.
“This program helps to make poetry accessible to our sixth grade students,” LMS ELA Teacher Ms. Skye Kaminski said. “Many people find poetry to be intimidating and difficult to interpret. However, our students work closely with Oberlin College creative writing students to explore the genre and work on writing original works.”

OHS Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach Howard Chambers and the basketball team attended the Cleveland State Women’s Basketball team home opener against the Bowling Green State University Falcons on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024. It was a great experience - and a great way to team bond!
OHS/KHS Student Swap
As the president of the LC8, OHS Principal Mr. Brent Betts proposed to the other seven principals that we should “swap” students this fall and every year moving forward.
The reason?
“We hope that by visiting other school districts, we can grow each other’s perspective that will hopefully have a positive impact on the students' lives beyond their own high school graduation,” Mr. Betts said.
The students also shared their views on how expectations are formed.
“By seeing how other schools operate, we can challenge stereotypes and broaden our understanding of what’s possible,” one student remarked.

Eco-Charrette: Pioneering Sustainability Goals
Plans are moving along for the new 6-8 middle school building.
On October 17, 2024, ThenDesign Architecture (TDA) and Hammond Construction teams held an Eco-Charrette brainstorming session with District administrators, representatives from Oberlin College, the City of Oberlin, and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC). This workshop was integral in setting ambitious sustainability benchmarks for the project. Key takeaways from the session included goals for improving indoor air quality, reducing water usage, enhancing energy efficiency, and exploring alternative energy solutions. To meet the OFCC’s requirement for co-funded buildings, the new middle school aims to achieve Silver Certification through the United States Green Building Council.
