3rd-5th Grade State Assessments will Begin on April 29th
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is coming soon. This annual state assessment helps measure student learning and growth in key subjects. Starting on April 29 through May16, students in grades 3-5 will take assessments in English Language Arts and Math, and students in grade 5 will also take a Science assessment. These computer-based tests help students prepare for the future by building skills like problem-solving, writing, and critical thinking. The tests also help teachers and schools understand how well students are learning, ensuring they get effective lessons and the right support.
Parents can help their students get ready for the CAASPP assessments. Here are resources for parents and students that you can access at home:
Parent Information
Student Practice
Starting Smarter – CAASPP - Go to the “Check out the test questions” section for practice problems and answer keys.
CAASPP Practice & Training Tests - Help your student learn the test format, use helpful tools, and practice answering questions.
Smarter Balanced – Sample Questions & Essays - See question types and view sample student essays with scoring explanations.
How Parents Can Help
Encourage your students to keep a positive attitude, and always praise their effort and growth.
Remind students that they are capable and prepared to show their learning.
Encourage healthy habits: Get 8-10 hours of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, get daily exercise, and arrive at school on time each day.
Talk to your teachers about how to support learning at home.
We appreciate your support to help your students practice and build confidence so they are ready to shine on the CAASPP!

Leader in Me - Habit #7 "Sharpen the Saw"
This month, we are focusing on Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw, which reminds us to take care of ourselves so we can be our best in everything we do. Just like a saw needs to be sharpened to work properly, we all need to take time to renew and recharge in four key areas:
✅ Body – Eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough sleep
✅ Mind – Reading, learning new things, and being creative
✅ Heart – Spending time with family and friends, showing kindness
✅ Spirit – Practicing gratitude, enjoying nature, or quiet reflection
When students learn to Sharpen the Saw, they build lifelong habits that promote well-being and balance.
How You Can Help at Home
Parents can support their child by encouraging activities that strengthen all four areas. Here are a few fun ideas to try as a family:
💪 Body: Go for a family walk or bike ride, cook a healthy meal together, or have a dance party!
📚 Mind: Read a book as a family, play a strategy game, or do a fun science experiment.
❤️ Heart: Have a family game night, write notes of appreciation to each other, or volunteer together.
🧘 Spirit: Practice mindfulness or deep breathing, take a break from screens, or enjoy the outdoors.
By practicing Habit 7, children learn that taking care of themselves isn’t just important—it helps them be stronger, happier, and ready to learn!
We encourage you to talk about Sharpening the Saw at home and find ways to make it part of your family’s daily life. Thank you for partnering with us in helping your child grow into a happy, healthy, and well-balanced leader!
Important Surveys and Input
California Healthy Kids Survey - We also encourage all parents/guardians to take a quick survey as well, no matter what grade level you child is in. Here is the Mission Meadow CHKS Survey LInk. Please consider taking a few minutes to participate.
LCAP/Blueprint Input Survey -We need your help! It is time to see what is working, not working, and what needs are not being met for the actions and services being provided to our students in VUSD! We will share the community themes out publicly at the April 17th Board Meeting! This is your chance to have a say on how the district allocates funds for your child's education!

Student Check-Out Policy
- Important Student Check-Out Policy: For the safety of all students, please be aware of our school’s check-out policy:
Photo ID Required: Students can only be released to an adult who presents a valid photo ID and is listed on the student’s emergency contact list.
No Early Check-Outs During Final 30 Minutes: To minimize disruptions during the busy end-of-day activities, students cannot be checked out within 30 minutes of dismissal.
If you need to pick up your child early for an appointment or other reasons, please plan accordingly. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in helping us maintain a safe and smooth dismissal process.
Math Facts
Learning basic math facts is a cornerstone of academic success, especially for our 3rd-5th graders who are diving deep into multiplication and fractions. These foundational skills are not just classroom requirements—they are the building blocks for more complex problem-solving in middle school and beyond. Strong math fact fluency boosts confidence, improves problem-solving speed, and frees up mental energy to tackle challenging concepts.
We are excited to be able to offer Reflex Math and Frax for your children in the 2nd-5th grade to use and practice at home, as well as i-Ready Math. All students should be doing a minimum of 30 i-Ready minutes (Kinder-2nd) or 45 i-Ready minutes (3rd-5th) each week. We encourage all students to keep practicing their math facts every week at home. Whether it’s through flashcards, apps, or family quizzes, every bit of practice helps. Let’s continue working together to ensure all students sail into the next grade level with the skills they need to succeed.
