November 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Woodside Families,
Welcome to November! I can hardly believe that November is already here; however, the weather does seem to remind us winter is upon us. The time has flown by, and I am pleased with the amount of work and progress we have accomplished in the first two months of school.
Opening a school year always brings unexpected challenges, this year one of the challenges was too many darling 1st graders. 😊 Lucky for Woodside we were able to add a sixth 1st grade classroom. I know change is difficult for all of us, I am happy to report our 1st graders are thriving in their new smaller classes. I would like to welcome Olivia Stefanson, as our newest 1st grade teacher. She is excited to be at Woodside, we are excited as well.
I look forward to seeing you during our FALL conferences, Nov. 4 -5. This year the EPS District has a new approach to conferences. Having conference two full days allows parents and guardians to plan better for childcare versus five half days. I also believe it will be better for our students learning, half days change up the school’s routines, which can be difficult for some children. (truth be told, it is a little difficult for me too). 😊
Our staff is working hard this year collecting information on each student so they can share specific details with each parent/guardian on how their child is doing academically, socially, and behaviorally. We strongly encourage you to come to conferences and learn more about how your child is doing and take advantage of the opportunity to ask our staff questions. I am always in awe of the incredible support the parents at Woodside provide for their students. Everett Public School District follows a semester-based grading system, concluding the first semester on January 30, with Progress Reports scheduled to be sent home with students on February 13th.I am hoping you will enjoy this new two-day scheduling for conferences.
To quote Charlie Brown, “What if today, we were just grateful for everything?” During this wonderful fall season of celebration, I am so very thankful I was chosen to be the principal of this amazing school called Woodside! I am thankful for an incredibly talented, dedicated, and professional staff and the large and small actions they take each day to help our students – and each other – succeed. I am equally thankful for you, the parents and guardians who do their best each day to send us their beautiful children, and entrust us with their safety, and in so many ways, their very futures.
I wish the very best for you and your loved ones. Have a warm, safe, fall and Thanksgiving season.
Warmest Regards,
Danielle DeJong
Proud Woodside

PE Teacher's Message
🏃♀️ Fit and Fun: Your P.E. Scoop! 🏃
Hello Woodside Elementary School Parents,
As we embark on a new month, I wanted to share some important information regarding your child's physical education class at Woodside Elementary. Safety and your child's well-being continue to be our top priorities, so please take a moment to review the following reminders and updates:
Illness/Injuries:
If your child isn't feeling their best or has sustained an injury, please don't hesitate to communicate this with me. We want to ensure that every student has a safe and enjoyable experience during physical education class. To assist us in providing the appropriate support, kindly send in a parent or doctor's note to me. Having this information allows me to stay updated on your child's health status and make any necessary accommodations in class. With a note from either a parent or a doctor, I can adjust their physical activity level accordingly to ensure their comfort and safety.
Water Bottles:
Friendly reminder: please ensure your student brings a water bottle to PE each week for hydration. We're active for 45 minutes, with water breaks, and there's no fountain in the gym. Students can bring their own bottles from home.
Just wanted to say a big Congrats to Ms. Ravitch's 3rd grade class for proving they are the fastest class in the school by winning the FASTEST CLASS CHALLENGE at Woodside Elementary School!
They ran the most average laps per student in 5 minutes in a school wide challenge during Physical Education Class this past week (233 laps/18 kids). Students in the winning class will get to keep the Fastest Class Trophy in their classroom until we complete the challenge again in a few months. They will also receive a special treat and a certificate for each student.
Also- Big Congrats to the Fastest Class by grade level
· K- Sloyer/10.93 average
· 1st- Anfinson/11.33
· 2nd- Parks/12.04 average
· 3rd- Ravitch/12.94 average (Fastest class overall)
· 4th- Teacher Correa/12 average
· 5th- Grosick/ 12.38 average
During the next round of the challenge each class will try to beat their own personal records and the trophy will be up for grabs again!
*Each grade level winner will get their class picture taken and placed on the poster located in the gym.
Upcoming activities in PE:
Grades K-2: During this period, our younger students will be engaging in the "Striking with Paddles and Balloons” unit. This unit focuses on hand-eye coordination, balance, and fundamental striking skills in a fun and dynamic environment.
Grades 3-5: Meanwhile, our older students will be getting into the spirit of Pickleball! Pickleball is a fantastic sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It's a great way to improve agility, strategy, and sportsmanship.
Thank you for your continued support and for prioritizing the well-being of your child during physical education classes. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
Respectfully,
Mr. Langley/Physical Education Specialist
What’s happening in music this November?
5th Graders have been working on meter in music and labeling time signatures. Meter in music is how the beats are grouped into measures, while the time signature is the stacked numbers in music. This is an important music skill as 5th graders have started reading rhythms using counts that align with the meter/time signature.
4th Grade students are working hard on rehearsing for their Veterans Day Concert, Stars and Stripes Forever; We Salute Our Veterans. The concert will take place on Thursday, November 7th at 9:00AM in the Woodside gym during our school assembly. Families and veterans are invited to attend the morning performance. Concert songs can be accessed online: https://bit.ly/WOEVeteransConcert
3rd Grade has been reviewing know rhythms including quarter note, eighth notes, quarter rest, and half note. Using rhythms we created candy rhythms in music class. Ask your child what a half note is, how it sounds, and if they can perform their candy rhythm for you.
2nd Grade has been working on a new solfege note, la. Using all of the notes we know la, sol, and mi, we have been reading, writing and performing melodies on the music staff.
1st Grade has started working on writing their first rhythms, long and short-short. Ask your child what a long and short-short are, how it sounds, and if they can create a long and short-short rhythm for you.
Kindergarteners are working on keeping a steady beat and tracking the beat on picture charts. As you listen to music at home, ask your kindergartner to find the beat!

Attendance is vitally important to success in school. All students must be in school unless they are excused for a medical appointment or illness.
We ask you to call our 24-hour attendance line, (425) 385-7805, or e-mail Woodside Attendance at WoodsideAttendance@everettsd.org to report your child’s absence.
Please call or e-mail the morning of the absence (or before). You may also send in a note excusing the absence on their first day back. If we have not heard from you, you will receive a computer-generated message reminding you to call the school. Woodside runs attendance reports at the end of every month. Notes will go home with students who have two or more unexcused absences or five or more excused OR unexcused tardies. Washington State has a mandatory school attendance law. Continued unexcused absences may result in filing a truancy petition. Please make every effort to get your student to school each day on time. Your efforts are appreciated by our staff and your child’s classroom teacher.

Student Safety at Woodside Elementary
STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES
To ensure the safe arrival and dismissal of our students, the following drop-off and pickup procedures have been established. We really need everyone’s help to keep the start of every school day safe for students!
SCHOOL HOURS: Students may be dropped off no earlier than 8:15am, since we do not have supervisory coverage available until that time. Please do not bring your child to school until that time, unless they are having breakfast at Woodside which begins at 8:00am. Students are tardy if they arrive after the 8:35am start time. Dismissal is at 2:50pm, Monday through Thursday and 1:35pm on Friday. Your punctuality is greatly appreciated.
DROP OFF: Parents/guardians are asked to drop off students at the sidewalk only in the designated drop-off/pick-up areas in front of the school. You must drop off your child at the sidewalk and then move on immediately to keep traffic flowing. If you need to park and walk to the sidewalk or enter the school in the morning, please park in a designated parking space.
PICK UP: Students who walk home from school, or who are picked-up by a parent/guardian are dismissed at the end of the school day. If someone other than a parent/guardian is picking-up your child, please send a note to the school indicating that. Any change in dismissal or early dismissal requires a note with parent/guardian signature. Please remain in the courtyard area until the teachers have safely walked their students to their pick up spot.
If you pick up children in the afternoon using the drive-up method, you are asked to remain in or at your car in one of the designated drop-off/pick-up areas along the sidewalk and have your child come to your car. Please do not park and leave your car unattended in a drop-off/pick-up area.
WOODSIDE PARKING LOT PROTOCOL
So many children and cars have the potential of becoming a dangerous place with tragic results if parking lot protocol and civility are not adhered to. Please be courteous to other drivers and vigilant in watching out for the safety of our students. Always drive slowly in our parking lot, especially thru our “Valet Zone.” It is imperative that we follow the rules to ensure the safe and steady flow of traffic in our parking lot. Parking in a fire or non-permitted handicap zone is against the law. Please do not “double park” as this greatly affects the traffic flow and causes tempers to rise. If at all possible, please have your child walk to school as this could ease the traffic situation and make our parking lot a safer place for students and parents.
Following these few simple guidelines should result in safe and efficient transport of students to and from school.
- Enter and exit the parking lot through the designated gates. You may only exit to the right when leaving the Woodside parking lot. Please be patient and polite.
- Park only in designated parking areas on school property. These areas are marked along the north side of the lot as you enter and in the center isles of the lot. There is no parking along the sidewalk in front of the school, along the south exit lane or in the lanes behind cars parked in the center of the lot.
- If you need to park your vehicle and the lot is full, continue onto the street and park. The public sidewalk along the front of the school property is wide and safe for walking. If you want to have your student meet you in front of the school, they will need to walk to your car via the sidewalks. Under no circumstances should a student be encouraged to cross the street to a waiting car.
- If you do park on the other side of the street, have your student walk with other students to one of the intersections with a crossing guard, cross the street with the patrol and walk on the sidewalk to your car.
It is frustrating when you are in a hurry and the traffic is not. Please allow enough time to drop off and pick up your child from school. Parking lot protocol is designed to keep children safe - it’s a responsibility we all share.
