Summer Reading Program Statistics Collection Now Open

Statistics collection for the children's and young adult Summer Reading Program is now open through September 30th. There will be one online survey for collecting children's and YA program numbers, and libraries must designate one staff member to submit one form for both programs. The collection survey can be found at http://olis-ri.libwizard.com/srp19stats

Completion of the statistics collection is required to receive 2020 SRP materials. There will be a separate survey for collecting statistics for the adult program.

Join a CSLP Commmittee

Committees are the lifeblood of the Collaborative Summer Library Program. The hard work and creativity of our volunteers shape both the program and the organization. Strong committee participation leads to a strong CSLP.

While the duties vary, committee obligations generally run for one calendar year, and are renewable up to five times. Sign-ups for 2020 are from Aug 12 - Sept 27. All committee work is done virtually; either through email, or through phone or online meetings. Attending the CSLP Annual Meeting is not required.

CSLP Wants to Hear from YOU!

The Statistics Committee of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is conducting a survey to better understand how public library staff use and value CSLP membership and materials. This short survey should only take a few minutes and all public library staff who develop and implement a children's, teen, and/or adult summer library program are encouraged to participate. CSLP will share the data collected from this survey with CSLP state representatives and the CSLP Board of Directors; all responses will remain anonymous.

Multiple library staff from the same library should complete the sections of the survey most relevant to their work; e.g. children, teen, or adult programs.

This survey is open now through September 13.

Call for 2023 Theme Suggestions

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) needs your theme ideas for the 2023 program! The theme is the broad, general topic to frame the summer program for that year.

Recent and upcoming themes include:

2016: exercise/sports/wellness
2017: building/construction
2018: music
2019: space
2020: world mythology/fairy tales/folklore
2021: animals
2022: World-Social Justice-Unity-Kindness-Inclusion-Change-Diversity-Equity-Make a Difference-Embrace different Cultures

Rhode Island suggestions will be voted on at the CSLP Annual Meeting, held this September in Indianapolis. The call for a slogan to go with the theme will be sent out in the Spring of 2020.

The artist for the 2023 program is award winning illustrator Frank Morrison. From his website:

World War I: Lessons And Legacies For Libraries

The Smithsonian Institution is offering a free poster exhibition about World War I to all types of libraries: public, school, college/university and special libraries.

Participating libraries will receive, free of charge:

Collection of eight 18” x 26” posters
Digital World War I: Lessons and Legacies Educators Guide with discussion questions and resources that align to national teaching standards
Detailed Poster Handbook and User Guide, with display instructions and promotional resources

YALSA Institute: Teen Services with Impact

Library teen services are about more than getting teens into the library. These services are about the impact libraries can have on the lives of teens. In this session participants learn how to describe the value of what they do for and with teens, build an understanding of how social emotional learning fits into the work that they do with and for teens, and explore how to engage with community to develop services that ultimately help teens to grow up successfully.

Children's Sensory Story Time Support Group

Join fellow youth services librarians to share best practices for sensory story times and inclusive library programs and services. We will be discussing community connections, sensory activity ideas, and programs/services beyond story time.

The Sensory Story Time Support Group is a grassroots community of practice developed and faciliated by Maria Cotto at the Pawtucket Public Library and Babs Wells at the Greenville Public Library. The Sensory Storytime Support Group seeks to empower youth services librarians to better serve children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families by expanding programming, outreach, partnerships, and resources that welcome all abilities. The Whole Book Approach, developed by former Carle educator Megan Lambert, gives educators, parents, and caregivers the tools to evaluate the picture book as an art form and encourages the critical engagement of children during picture book reading experiences. Mock Newbery Discussion #1

It's time to start taking a closer look at the children's books of 2019. Please read 8 of the 16 books on the discussion list for the first meeting. Participating in the Mock Newbery is an opportunity to read the newest children’s books and to discuss them with other passionate readers. Voting for a Rhode Island winner and honor books will take place on January 14, 2020 using the balloting procedures of the real committee.
