The Rhodes Ahead
Sept. 13, 2024
From Mrs. Rhodes
The services for Cassandra Delmont-Chapman are here with a Rosary at 5:30 Monday night and visitation from 6-8. Funeral Mass is Tuesday at 10. Students in grades 4-8 will be attending the funeral unless you contact the homeroom teacher saying you don't want them to go. Either way is fine for us, we have people planned to cover supervision so as many teachers can go as want to. If you would like your K-3 student to go, please check them out of the office and have them attend with you.
Here are some reasons for attending Catholic funerals:
1. Work of Mercy
Attending a funeral is considered a corporal work of mercy within the Catholic Faith. It is an act of charity to "bury the dead" and to offer prayers for the soul of the deceased, which is deeply connected to the Church's teachings on the dignity of every human person.
2. Support for the Bereaved
Funerals offer a vital opportunity for the community to offer comfort and support to grieving family members and friends, helping to bear one another's burdens as Christ instructed.
3. Communion of Saints
The Catholic belief in the Communion of Saints reminds us that death does not sever the bond between the living and the dead. By attending funerals, Catholics actively participate in the prayers offered for the deceased, aiding their journey to eternal life, and reaffirm their connection with those who have passed before them.
4. Reminder of Eternal Life
Funerals are a powerful reminder of our belief in the resurrection and eternal life. Reflecting on the meaning of life, death, and the promise of Christ's resurrection, which offers hope and comfort amidst sorrow is important.
5. Offering Prayers for the Deceased
Catholics believe in the importance of praying for the dead, especially through the funeral Mass. The prayers offered are not just for the comfort of the living but also for the soul of the deceased, asking God to grant them mercy and a place in heaven.
By attending funerals, Catholics honor the sacredness of life, the hope in Christ’s resurrection, and the interconnectedness of the Church community, both on earth and in heaven. I have had students do this before and it is not a devastating or traumatic event. The teachers will work with the class on what to expect and answer questions.
Thank you for keeping the Chapman family in your prayers. If you would like to financially support them - I know the obituary said contributions toward Stella's Educational 529 - we thought we might again collect to see if other needs came up and allow Ben to make that contribution.
