Texas Dyslexia Academy (TDA) 6: Dysgraphia provides educators with foundational information about dysgraphia, which is a related disorder to dyslexia. In this course, participants explore how students acquire writing skills, what dysgraphia is, the identification process, and the provision of services for students with dysgraphia as outlined in the Dyslexia Handbook.

A More Perfect Union: Planning Your 4th Six-Weeks in 8th Grade US History
A More Perfect Union is a professional development series for 8th Grade US History teachers to collaborate and plan for the upcoming six-weeks. In our third session, we will begin with a pacing check-in, followed by planning out both the Westward Expansion and Industrialization units. With an eye on STAAR preparation, you will leave the workshop with a unit blueprint and interactive activities to continue your year full of learning!

Texas Dyslexia Academy (TDA) 2: The Dyslexia Handbook was developed to assist school districts and charter schools in understanding The Dyslexia Handbook 2024 Update: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders. In this course, participants explore the handbook and learn about important updates from the 2024 version of the handbook.

Getting Ready for Holocaust Remembrance Week
The state of Texas has mandated that all schools observe Holocaust Remembrance Week. which is Jan 27-Jan 21. For the most part, this solemn privilege falls on social studies teachers. So, what is your plan?
Come to Region 16 and collaborate with other teachers to devise a game plan and get prepared. In this session, you will not only learn more about how to teach about the Holocaust, but you will interact with age-appropriate resources to use in your classroom during the week. Discuss strategies for integrating digital resources into lesson preparation, inclusion plans, student research, and/or project-based learning. Seeing the World in a Grain of Sand: Switching Scales to Teach Social Studies
To teach social studies, sometimes we are like dogs, our noses buried in the small details of a specific time and place. Other times, we are like birds, hovering high in the air, looking for general patterns and themes. For students to get the full picture, we need to do both or switch scales--the practice of zooming in and zooming out to better understand a topic. In this session, teachers will first focus on the importance of scale-switching and then learn how to put the skill into practice in their classrooms. Come and learn now "to see the world in a grain of sand."

ADHD, Executive Function & Behavioral Challenges in the Classroom
Presenter Cindy Goldrich will give teachers, guidance counselors, and school psychologists an understanding of the social and emotional impact that ADHD and Executive Function
challenges have on learning, motivation, behavior, and the family system. Upon completing this program, participants will:
Have a functional and actionable understanding of Executive Function skills and what performance can be expected at different learning levels. Learn valuable methods to manage problems with attention, organization, stress, homework completion, and test performance based on the latest brain research and evidence-based best practices. Discover subtle changes in teaching methods and classroom structure to improve time management, working memory, motivation, and emotional regulation that will benefit all children, not only those with ADHD. Participants will learn practical tips, tools, and strategies to help students gain self-awareness, self-direction, and greater accountability that can be incorporated into everyday teaching and across the curriculum. They will also receive valuable handouts and resources for teachers, parents, and students to manage homework, home/school communication, study skills, behavior, and more.

Texas Dyslexia Academy (TDA) 1: Foundations is the first of six training opportunities developed to assist educators to better understand dyslexia and related disorders. In this course, participants learn foundational information about how students acquire reading skills, why some students struggle in reading, what dyslexia is, and warning signs that dyslexia may be causing a student’s reading difficulties.
