Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Staff, Students, and Families,
December 10th celebrates International Human Rights Day, a day of acknowledgment around the world commemorating the anniversary of one of the most important global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, religion, gender, age, language, ethnicity, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. The UN has assembled a collection of powerful informational exhibits on current and past injustices featuring art, photography, personal narratives, historical research, and poetry.
“The Universal Declaration shows the way common values and approaches can help resolve tensions and create the security and stability our world craves."
- UN Secretary-General António Guterres
December also celebrates World Arabic Day on the 18th. Kudos to LHS Arabic teacher Ruqayya Jarad who was selected to present at a QFI sponsored World Language Summit in Washington, DC this month. The workshop will touch on topics of assessment, student motivation, and communicative lesson planning, with language proficiency at the center. Ms. Jarad will be part of an international panel focused on assessment. We are grateful to have internationally recognized global educators at LHS.
We are thrilled to announce that Lincoln has officially been approved to be a Middle Years Program (MYP) for ALL students at the 9th & 10th grades in addition to offering the IB Diploma Program (DP) to 11th & 12th Grade students. All Skyline, West Sylvan and Lincoln 6th-10th graders will be IB scholars through this powerful articulation and alignment for inquiry based teaching and learning. We are researching the IB Career Pathways (CP) program as our CTE classes are already in line witht he IB framework and doing fantastic work. Our accreditation approval team from IB noted the “Excellence in instruction, differentiation, and buy-in from teachers and the community.” We are an IB World School!
Happy holidays to all who will be celebrating the Winter Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Chanukah this month. May there be peace and justice for all.
Go Global-minded Caring Cards!

Student account access while traveling
PPS student accounts can only be used from within the United States as a security protection. This includes access to my.pps.net and all Google services, including Gmail and Drive. If students must access PPS systems while traveling outside the US, Parents or guardians should send a request for international access to support@pps.net. To allow OTIS to properly provision the access, requests must include the departure and return dates.

Performing Arts
CLUE - Now Playing
If you haven’t seen CLUE you have just three more opportunities before the show closes this Friday 12/13. The show is engaging, quirky, suspenseful, funny, and appropriate for ages 12+. Showing up helps show support for our school and the arts. Students can let a counselor or admin know if cost is a barrier. Otherwise, please buy your tickets at www.lincolnhighschooldrama.ORG. Murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll never forget! Was it Mrs. Peacock in the study with the knife? Or was it Colonel Mustard in the library with the wrench? Based on the cult 1985 Paramount movie and inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, Clue is the ultimate whodunit that will leave you dying of laughter and keep you guessing until the final twist. Content Advisory: Please note that Clue on Stage is recommended for ages 12+. This production contains loud noises, sudden blackouts, flashing lights, smoking, staged physical violence, and sexual innuendo.

Student Shout Outs
Congratulations to LHS Senior Akim Arkhangelski who was honored as the November Portland Pearl Rotary Student of the Month. Akim and his family moved here from Russia just 15 months ago, but he has become one of Lincoln's most involved students, serving as the President of Lincoln’s FBLA club, on track to earn his IB Diploma, volunteering at LHS, all while running an entrepreneurial small business. Akim just learned that he is the recipient of the highly competitive QuestBridge Scholarship which he will be using to fully fund his undergraduate degree at Boston College this coming fall. Go Akim and Go 2025 Cards!
Kudos to LHS junior Luke Zhang who participated in Cyber Patriot competition this year. With his contribution, Team TitanTortoises ranked 2nd place in Oregon and 41st place in the world and advanced to Platinum Tier (Nation’s Top 30% out of 2,068 Open Division teams). Throughout the season, Luke demonstrated gracious professionalism, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, collaboration and fun spirit. The competition was organized by US Air Force Academy. This is the 17th year of the event. During off season in 2024, Luke and other club students shared foundational knowledge and how to self-defend against social engineering and malware attacks with many residents in the Bethany community. The competition subjects include the below defense of the systems: Windows, Windows Server, Linux, Cisco Networking. Luke serves as Vice President of Windows on the team. Luke’s flexibility to adapt to competing priorities amongst school work, extracurricular activities and family life are genuine representations of Lincoln High School’s student quality. Go Luke!
Pro Designers presented at the Fall Media Day at University of Oregon and 30 of Lincoln's Mss Comm CTE students were fully engaged in the work! Thank you teacher/advisor Mary Rechner!

Volunteer Service Opportunities
With the holiday season here, The Salvation Army is seeking local groups to volunteer as Bell Ringers for our Red Kettle Campaign. This campaign started on Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas Eve. We are grateful to our retail partners across America who allow us to ring bells outside their doors during this busy season to raise funds for our programs. This holiday season, we want to invite you and your school to participate in this heartwarming opportunity! Choose a special day to come together, boost team spirit, and Spread Christmas Cheer at the kettle. We encourage everyone to embrace the festive spirit—feel free to dress in Christmas attire, or costumes, sing carols, play instruments, or come up with any other creative ideas you may have! You are also welcome to wear your school attire! The donations raised through this campaign will directly impact individuals in our local community.
They help provide toys for children, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry, and various social service programs throughout the year. Volunteers are "the army behind The Army," enabling us to offer these vital community services. If you are interested or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to me or you can sign up online at

These are challenging times. We get it! Lincoln students in FlockFeast Service Club have been teaming up with Clay Street Table Food Pantry to help supply families with food. Food will be bagged by students and can either be picked up at a local pantry (1314 SW Park Ave.) or if you live nearby Lincoln, they can be delivered. Please let us know if you are interested, and a parent volunteer will follow up and get details about what kinds of food would be helpful, and to coordinate deliveries. We will also explain how confidentiality is respected.
