Surfside Shark Bites
Week of December 9-13 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Happy Friday, Surfside families!
Surfside has so many great things to report. Our basketball team is looking stronger with every practice, the elementary test results are very positive indicating some excellent growth in math and English, the holiday door decorating contest turned out some quality results, the Surfside annual raffle tickets for excellent behavior are being distributed, and Mrs. Felicia has our annual Pop Up Shop looking fantastic. The Pop Up Shop will be open for student to shop for themselves and their families at no cost next week.
Also, the construction process is moving right along. This week 31 concrete trucks were on site to pour the footing for a retaining wall that extends across the western boundary of our school. The parking lot is slated to be complete by the end of January. It's exciting to see things progress!
The holiday break is right around the corner. Please remember that school is in session next week from Monday through Friday, and students are expected to get their work done and attend school.
Please know that we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in preparing Surfside students for their futures. My hope is that you are able to spend some of the holiday season with friends and family, revisit fond traditions, and just simply relax.
Thank you for your support!
Principal Frandsen
Weekly Construction Update
Construction Update:
Thirty one concrete trucks were on site this week to pour the footing for a retaining wall that extends along the western boundary of our property. The next step will be for workers to form and pour the vertical part of the wall. Once this is done in the next month or so, the rest of the site can be leveled in preparation for the next phase of construction. It's important to note that most of the utilities have already been trenched and installed. Finally, our new parking lot should be completed and usable by the end of January. This will allow for staff and students to park on the school property.
New OUSD Report Card System
This shift to digital grade access offers several benefits, including:
Environmental sustainability: Reduces paper consumption and waste.
Faster access: Parents can view grades immediately upon release.
Improved communication: Provides a centralized platform for parents to access student information.
Cost savings: Eliminates printing and mailing expenses.
To support this transition, we have taken the following steps:
Parent Resources: The IT department has created a series of instructional videos to guide parents on navigating the Aeries Parent Portal and accessing report cards.
These videos are available at https://bit.ly/ousdparentportal
These resources can also be found on the ITS webpage at www.oside.us/departments/information-technology-services-its/aeries-parent-portal.
Families can download these reports via Aereis. Please see the instructions below:

Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Dear Families,
We have amazing, incredible, intelligent, kind, and many other characteristics to describe our students. I am impressed with the iReady results so far to show students really are working the program and getting the support from parents at home. If you have not completed the iReady, please get that done as soon as possible. Our ultimate goal is for all students to be on grade level and beyond, and to feel successful.
If a child needs support, please reach out to me, so we can provide the best support possible to help them reach their goals.
Math Challenge: Geometry Shapes all around us. Cubes, cylinders, spheres, rectangular prisms, and cones are all around us. As you go about your day, have your child identify objects they see that fit each of the characteristics of a 3-dimensional shape. To make it adaptable for Kindergarten and 1st, they can identify squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles.
Important Dates:
Dec 3- Dec 18: iReady Diagnostic Window Open
December 23-Jan 10 Winter Recess (No School)- No Virtual or In-person
Jan 17: Turn in Unit 5

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
