Spring Book Fair: 3/18 - 3/22
March is Reading Month: Harlan Presents Tournament of Books
Brought to you by your March is Reading Month Committee
Harlan is celebrating March is Reading Month by sharing 8 stories together as an entire school. Students will be listening to the stories in their classroom and have the opportunity to vote on their favorite titles. Just like March Madness for basketball, but with books. We will have author visits and activities throughout the month, to celebrate how much we love to read.

What are your students working on in March?
- Read alouds and focusing on characters/setting/plot/sequence
- Responding to texts
- Author information/Book Fair fun
- MIRM activities
- Using Choice Boards during choice time
- Understanding the layout of the library and how to checkout books
- How to work at stations (makerspace, centers, group work)
Students in 3-5 currently attend Library at a fixed time. However, their schedule is more flexible and revolves around checkout and integrated classroom research and projects. They will be working on the following for now:
- Students will begin their coding lessons and will be able to keep their accounts for the rest of the year.
- Students will continue to check out books and use online databases and resources.
- Digital Citizenship lessons will begin again in April.
Checkout Common Sense Media for any questions you have regarding digital citizenship. This is a great website to check out to see if movies or books are age appropriate for your children.
Library Policies/Procedures
#Items to be checked out:
Kdg and 1st = up to 2 items
2nd - 5th = up to 3 items
Books are allowed out for 2 weeks before an overdue notice will be generated. If you need more time than two weeks please ask for them to be renewed.
If books are lost or damaged students must pay for books to be replaced. This is to make sure our library collection is up to date and everyone has access to their favorite books.
Fines can be paid for by check (made payable to Birmingham Public Schools and in the memo line write Harlan Library) or cash. Please address the envelope to Mrs. Coleman.
Support our library collection by purchasing a birthday book!
