Notes from Dr. Mullenschlader
Local Government Day
Our 7th graders are spending today learning about local government operations. We have been blessed to have the opportunity to collaborate with St. Charles City and St. Charles County on providing such a meaningful experience for our students. The students are receiving presentations from the mayor and local government officials, as well as taking part in a government simulation on an actual current government project. Thank you for Beth Norviel, Kory Goodson, and Councilman Justin Foust for developing the curriculum and inviting our students to be a part of the day. In particular, I am grateful to school board member Colin Wellenkamp who helped coordinate with the city and county on this experience. I am hopeful that this will plan the seeds for our students to recognize the importance of engaging in civic matters and recognize how the work we do here gives them the foundation to lead those around them for the betterment of humanity.
SCRIP Gift Card Program
We have been informed that the SCRIP gift card program will be discontinued. According to the Archdiocese, a parish needs to generate $5,000 a month in profit to maintain a program. St. Charles Borromeo does not meet this criteria. We are selling off the remaining inventory from this program. Gift Cards are available in the parish office until they are gone. Sales are on a first come basis. If you are interested in purchasing gift cards, you can contact Mary Lorenz through email at mlorenz@stpstc.org or (636) 344-7001.

Robotics Jamboree
Your St. Charles Borromeo BOTCATS competed this past Saturday, April 27th in the Clavius Jamboree held at St. Louis University High School. Around 30 middle school teams competed using SPIKE Prime LEGO® bricks, a programmable, multi-port hub, coding language based on Scratch and STEAM learning units. There were 11 challenges that the students had to write codes for where they used the robot's color, ultrasonic, force, and gyro sensors as well as loop programming and event blocks. In addition, each group of two students was tasked with designing their own challenge where they had to apply their knowledge of how to operate the robot with a real world problem, such as using the robot to rescue trapped people in a building collapse or wounded soldiers on a battlefield and transport them to a hospital. We had 9 SCB students and five robots competing. Those students include 8th graders Will Kuehler, Marshall Thro, Karsten Beckemeier, and Jackson Voelkl. 7th graders include Fiona Floodman, Avery Quarando and Chase Kneale. 6th graders Clara Huelsing and Owen Long rounded out the team. All five teams performed very well under pressure and showed extreme perseverance and time management skills. When things went wrong, like when a robot's battery died, they had to pivot and problem solve. We won't know our scores for a few more weeks, but we are very proud of our students and their hard work this year in robotics.
