KISU Primary Newsletter

It might seem odd to say welcome back at the start of April, but next Friday is a special welcome back. For the first time in 2 years we will be having a social gathering involving parents, teachers and students. The welcome back events at the start of each year were always one of my favourite PTA functions and we are going to replicate this as we welcome back the KISU family. There will be food and drinks available as well as activities for the children. It will be held on the lawn outside of the auditorium or in the auditorium if the weather is unkind to us. Everyone is welcome but I would particularly encourage new parents who may not have experienced this type of event at KISU before. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible and am sure you will have a great time.

Unfortunately we will not be able to look after children who are not accompanied by a parent or guardian.

This week has been loaded with lots of knowledge as well as fun. The Literacy committee's organised Book Week has been fantastic! All the children across the school have participated in joint activities with older and younger students such as reading together, discussed their favorite book characters, written super fiction stories, explored non-fiction genres as well as presented poetry and plays. We certainly have a love of reading at KISU that is coming through in our every-improving writing. What we read informs our writing, 'see it, say it, read it, write it'. All writers are 'magpies', it's ok to choose the best bits and ideas of others and then make it writing your own! Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever read a book? Look what wonderful things our pupils can do whilst reading a favorite book! Thank you to all the pupils who shared their ‘Extreme Reading’ photographs reading a book in unusual circumstances and thank you for showing everyone how reading can be done anywhere and at anytime! You can continue to send in photographs which can be added to our reading display. Please remember to stay safe - reading is meant to be fun, not dangerous!

Here’s a glimpse at a few…

In Literacy, Reception children continued to study their key text this term, ‘We’re Going on a Bear hunt’ by ordering events to follow the story. A fun, interesting and exciting way to develop their understanding of the plot and sequencing of the events, was to explore using some hands on sensory activities to give them a practical kinesthetic and playful experience through which, they retold the story.

The children are now currently innovating the original story by introducing a new storyline where the Bear is looking for a family, the title being, ‘I am looking for a family, the one who can love me.’ They have made a new story map and following the innovation process, they will go on to invent their own individual stories.

Have you ever heard the True story of the 3 little pigs as told by The Big Bad Wolf? For the last 2 weeks, Year 3 students have been doing activities around the topic of point of view. The students listened to the traditional fairy tale of The Three Little Pigs as told by the pigs. Then they compared, assessed and made their judgment as to whose side they agreed with. Finally they wrote a fractured fairy tale with a twist from the original traditional tale of their choice.

As part of the Literacy week activities, Year 3 also decided to make book covers and book reviews of their favorite books, and here is our Jabberwocky film trailer that we made as part of our assembly presentation on the poem entitled the same...

This week our theme of the week was Knowledge. Pupils were awarded certificates from their Class Teacher for a range of reasons across different subject areas linked to demonstrating knowledge, securing knowledge, sharing knowledge and finding things out.

As I said in last weeks newsletter, we have relaunched Edshed and your child should have been given their individual Spelling Shed username and password.

Imagine my surprise this week when I walked into Mr Polan's year 6 classroom to see on the screen the following image...

If you want to know how many classes worldwide are assigned to Spelling shed then google it! What an incredible achievement Year 6!

Please don't forget to sign your child up for any after school activity clubs that they are interested in joining for the next 10 weeks until the end of term. Clubs start on Monday 28th March but have limited places. The Club Leader's email contact is on the list that was shared this week and I have also attached it again below for your information.

The weather has been so beautiful lately and a dip in the pool is the perfect way to cool down. Children are really been enjoying their swimming lessons and the Saturday morning club continues to be popular. I can see weekly improvement in some of the regular attenders, however, there are also a number of children who often forget their swimming kit. It is beginning to be the same faces sat poolside with a reading book! Please help your child to remember their kit. Swimming is statutory in Primary and part of our curriculum, just as Maths and English sessions are, thank you for your support. Here's KG2 off for their weekly swimming session, if our youngest can all remember their kit, then I am confident all pupils can too!

The ISSAK sport trials were a huge success this week with a great turn out from both the U11 girls and boys. Many U9 boys also showed off their sporting talent making the coaches team selection tricky. I think our basket ball season is going to be very busy, very fun and very rewarding. I am looking forward to our Saturday matches this term. Details and dates will be shared once we have liaised with other schools.

Thank you Ms Azeema Ladak for bringing in to school your resources and equipment to help help educate KISU primary students during National Oral Health Week with your most informative dental workshops.. All the children are now extra well informed to make healthy choices regarding their diet and personal hygiene. Parents, please ask your children in Year 1,2,3,4 what they have learnt - they asked Ms Azeema many questions and listened beautifully! (My son came home and told me that brushing only cleans our teeth 60% and flossing cleans the other 40% - I have now bought dental floss!)

(Year 5 and Year 6 sessions are this Monday 28th).

Class Photographs / Sibling Photographs/ Whole school Photographs which were taken by Colour Chrome, Mr. Mehul Kanani and his team will be at KISU from 28th March to the 6th April from 7.30am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm to take your orders.

You will be able to view the sample photographs and approve print by completing an order form and making a full payment at the same time directly to them. School will not be involved in any of the photograph payments. Please reach out to them next to the Sports Hall gate (behind where KISU buses are parked) to place your orders.

If you miss them at school, you can go directly to their studio at Acacia Mall and place an order for your child/ren's photographs.
