From the Principal's Pen

We were so happy to welcome our students back to school today! Thank you for your patience through all of these changes. We know how challenging it has been for families, and we are grateful for your support. We are also thankful for our community partners the Boys & Girls Club and the YWCA of Greenwich for opening their doors to our students this past week.

We encourage ALL JC parents and caregivers to attend this important presentation.

Peter Bernstein will also be joining at the beginning of the meeting to provide details regarding the BOE's support of the JC Improvement plan.

Patti Jomo will also be speaking on "The 2nd Parent-Teacher Conference in March - How to USE IT as a TOOL to ACCELERATE YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING." Only the families of students at Julian Curtiss and New Lebanon schools will be receiving the opportunity to have a second individual conference with their child's teacher this year. This presentation will explain how you can best take advantage of this opportunity!

Thank you to Randi Jachino and Allison Spivak along with our mighty Media Specialist Esra Murray for planning and organizing these wonderful and inspiring enrichment experiences for our students. Thank you to our generous PTA for supporting these programs!

Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students got to experience an incredible virtual visit with award-winning graphic novel author Victoria Jamieson. She spoke about the writing process, where she gets her inspiration, and demonstrated how she illustrates her books. One quote that stuck with many of us watching was, "What is important isn't that it's perfect. It's that you tell your story." Later this year, fifth graders will be completing a unit all about graphic novels and creating their own. Many of them are already inspired and can't wait to get creating!

Students in grades K-2 took virtual field trips to the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo this week! They learned lots of fun facts from zoologists all about different animals and their habitats.

KHS had a special "lunch and learn" today to learn more about polar bears as a follow-up to their read-aloud A Polar Bear in the Snow. They had the opportunity head to the Arctic to learn all about polar bears and their habitats with staff and scientists from Polar Bears International via FlipGrid Virtual Field Trips.

We're launching Celebrate Reading Is For Everyone in recognition of Read Across America 2021 and Dr. Seuss's birthday next week, March 1-5! This week will also give us the opportunity to celebrate, promote and instill the love of reading into our students!

The Distinguished Teachers Award Committee has shared that the nomination process for this year is now open. New this year -- all nominations will be submitted electronically. Submission details and downloadable forms are available on the DTAC website. Our GPS teachers are incredible and we look forward to celebrating them! The deadline is March 10, 2021 at 5:00 pm.
