Superintendent's Corner
I am proud to share that WPSD has shown remarkable success in the 2024 CMAS results! The districtโs overall composite CMAS score is the highest in WPSDโs history, posted by the Colorado Department of Education. Last year, WPSD received its first-ever Distinction rating at a district level, which was middle school, making even greater strides this year, with two out of three levels earning a Distinction rating: elementary and middle school.
Every WPSD school saw significant improvement in CMAS composite scores, with all but one school achieving double-digit increases. Additionally, based on the 2024 preliminary District Performance Framework (DPF) results, WPSD is now ranked 18th in the stateโa testament to the hard work of our students and staff and the support of our families.
I am also pleased to inform you of an exciting new addition to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. The secondary campus is introducing a home construction class where high school students can earn certifications in various fields, including plumbing, electrical work, framing, and more. This new course will provide valuable hands-on experience and equip students with essential skills for future career opportunities.
Thank you for your continued commitment to academic excellence. With your partnership, we are making WPSD stronger every year.
๐ซ Board of Education Recap ๐
The Board of Education held its regular meeting on Wednesday, September 11, with President Mick Bates presiding.
During the meeting, the district received a special presentation from Purple Heart recipient John Bartlett, who presented a Purple Heart road sign to the Board. The sign will be displayed in a high-traffic area, marking WPSD as a Purple Heart school and part of the Purple Heart Trail. President Bates read the resolution, and touching speeches were delivered by Bartlett and fellow Purple Heart recipient Keith McKim.
Following public comment, the Chief Academic Officer presented the 2024 CMAS testing results, which highlighted numerous academic achievements. Every WPSD school saw significant increases in their composite CMAS scores, with all but one school achieving double-digit increases. Last year, the district earned its first-ever Distinction rating at a district level; this year, two of the three school levels received a Distinction rating. Notably, WPSDโs overall composite CMAS score was the highest in the districtโs history based on CDE data. Woodland Park is now ranked 18th in the state in composite score percentage points earned, missing "Accredited with Distinction" by just 0.2%. Additionally, Woodland Park demonstrated the third greatest increase (7.0%) in composite score percentage points earned within the Pikes Peak Region, outperforming neighboring districts, with Woodland Park earning 73.8%, Manitou Springs 72.2%, and Cripple Creek 44.3%. The district also achieved the 11th highest increase in composite score percentage points in the entire state.
In Board Reports, President Bates addressed the DAC/SAC committee applications and discussed the IGA with the city of Woodland Park, expressing confidence that the community will support the upcoming tax vote to maintain funding for the district.
Director Patterson and President Bates praised the schools and staff for their hard work on the 2024 CMAS testing results. Director Barkley raised concerns about overcrowding and bussing issues at Columbine. Director Rusterholtz thanked President Bates for his work on the IGA and expressed disappointment with the cityโs decision. He also requested that a discussion on merit-based pay be added to the agenda for the next meeting.
The next Board of Education regular meeting will be held on October 9, 2024.
