Magyar's Message March 22, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
We made it to the end of the Third Quarter. Spring is in the air and we are looking forward to some much needed time off during Spring Break so we can finish off the year strong.
After nearly two years of planning, the eclipse is almost here. Avon Lake is in the direct line of totality and many events are planned for the weekend leading up to April 8 (a list is below). The District has purchased solar eclipse glasses that will be given to all students and staff March 27. For more information regarding safely viewing the eclipse, click here.
Spring activities are buzzing as seniors prepare for graduation and State testing begins next month. It’s also a time when our musical groups put the finishing touches on their upcoming concerts. The ALHS Drama Club will also be performing Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” next month. Please refer to communications from your child’s building principal regarding upcoming events specific to each school. The district calendar is also available on our website, click here.
Did you know Avon Lake High School has an Esports Team? Over the past three years, the team has steadily been growing with approximately 50 members at this time with approximately 30 competing competitively in six to seven different games, depending upon the year.
Two of our teams recently went to Regionals for the games Rocket League and Valorant. Our Rocket League team won for the second year in a row. The Rocket League team will be going to States at the University of Akron on April 13-14. Congratulations and good luck.
We also have some accomplished film makers in our district. At last weekend’s Student Television Network Convention in San Diego, our student filmmakers from Avon Lake High School were awarded the Best Writing Award for their Short Film, Paradox.
Sophomore Gabe Leite, sophomore McKenna Coleman, sophomore Zane Florence, and senior Michael Daws created the film which is believed to be the first film award bestowed on a group of Avon Lake students. Avon Lake was also acknowledged for the second year in a row for the high school news show, Anchor News Now!, earning an award for Broadcast Excellence. Congratulations to everyone. A link to watch the film is included below.
We are still compiling the data from our recent Internet Safety Parent Information Night. As soon as we have the information, we will include it in an upcoming message. Our speaker, Jesse Weinberger, also has a wealth of information on her website. Click here.
Thank you again for taking the time to complete the online survey regarding our Building ALegacy initiative. We received 1,234 responses which exceeded our expectations. Dr. Dibee presented the results of the survey during this week’s Board of Education meeting. To view the results, click here. To hear the audio recording from the meeting, click here. As we continue to evaluate the data, as well as comments from the community, we are continuing to plan for our future. This planning includes taking a look at the project again to see where we may be able to make some adjustments.
After pushing pause and not placing a levy on the March ballot, the Board of Education sent out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for design/architectural firms to take another look at the scope of the project, as well as analyze the survey data. The Board voted this week to enter into an agreement with ThenDesign Architecture, Ltd. (TDA) for master planning and design services for our capital improvement program. We will continue to update the community on the progress.
Reminder, please save the date for our State of the Schools Address which is set to take place April 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Commons at Avon Lake High School. Please submit any questions you may have in advance so that we can include them in the presentation. To submit a question by April 1, click here.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
