During the month of December, our Buen Gaucho trait is Amigable-Friendly. To practice being friendly we are focusing on how to greet others. We also want our students to know how to respond when someone greets them. We have 4 greetings and responses that we are practicing school wide. We would love for parents to help our students practice these greetings at home! Here is the link with the 4 Saludos.

Based on our behavior data for the beginning of the school year, recess is the second most frequent location/time of day that we have behavior incidents. We plan to review our Buen Gaucho expectations with all students upon their return from break, but would love support from our families to review with students as well. If you'd like to volunteer for Recess duty, you can do so here.

We are unable to respond to the front bell or answer the phone after 3:00 PM

• Dismissal changes must be called in by 2:30 PM
• If you arrive to pick up a child after 3:00 PM, you will have to wait until we dismiss students.
• No guest will be allowed to enter the office after 3:00 PM

This safety policy was designed to allow staff to properly prepare for a safe student dismissal.

View the Lost & Found Newsletter images to see if you recognize any items that may belong to your student(s). Teachers will be bringing students down to look during lunch. If you would like to come in and look for lost items, you can do so during drop-off or anytime before 2:45 PM the week we return from break. All unclaimed items will be washed and donated by Monday, January 13th, so please be sure to stop by. If possible, please label your student's belongings with their name, as this will make it easier to return lost items to them in the future. Thank you.

In partnership with Popeyes Chicken, all elementary students will receive a bookmark from Poppy's Book Club. To promote literacy, all students who read three books over winter break will receive a free kids meal. Bookmarks will be dropped off and sent home with students. Happy reading over winter break!

January begins the lottery season for Columbus City Schools. A few notes regarding the lottery process:

• 5th grade student automatically have a reservation at World Languages Middle School (WLMS). However, parents must accept this reservation to keep their spot at WLMS. Reservation applications will be available on January 6, 2025 and must be submitted by January 31, 2025 via the School Choice link in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
• Return to homeschool - all of our families will receive a notice about returning to homeschool. This comes each year to our families as we are a full lottery school. You have the option to return to your school of address. If you wish to stay at CSIA you do not need to do anything. The request will be available for submission beginning on January 6, 2025 and must be submitted via the School Choice link in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal by March 21, 2025.
• PreK families - You must apply through the lottery system to attend CSIA for kindergarten. On-time lottery applications accepted via the Parent Portal for the lottery draw, Monday, February 3, 2025 through Monday, March 31, 2025.

What is College Credit Plus?

The State of Ohio's College Credit Plus Program can help students earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses from colleges and/or universities. The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options for college-ready students. Taking a College Credit Plus course from a public college or university is free, which means no cost for tuition, books, or fees. If you choose to attend a private college or university, you may have limited costs. In place of regular high school classes, students can take college courses and earn credits that can be transferred to colleges and universities after graduation.

CCP Information Sessions

Columbus City Schools invites you and your student (s) to join us for ONE of these mandatory information sessions in order for your students to participate in College Credit Plus (CCP) courses during the 2025-2026 School Year. You can choose to attend ONLY ONE face-to-face, virtually, or watch the video. The session will include a presentation on the College Credit Plus Program and information on next steps. College/university representatives will also be presenting information and available for individual questions about their application process.

This meeting is mandatory for ALL students taking CCP courses, regardless if it's taken on the college campus, online, or in your high school. Attending the informational meeting must be completed yearly along with submitting the Letter of Intent.

The Ohio State Community Music School (CMS) offers music instruction in-person and online to children and adults with diverse backgrounds, skill levels and differing educational goals through private instruction, classes and ensembles. All students have the opportunity to participate in recitals and other school-sponsored events. Financial Assistance Opportunities:

• Financial Aid Fund offers tuition assistance based on need and in order of application. Families receiving federal or state benefits like supplemental security income, food stamps, free or reduced lunch, temporary assistance, WIC, or home energy and utility assistance can qualify for financial aid.
• ACE recipients can apply for reimbursement for Community Music School Activities
• OSU Sophomore enrolled in STEP can use the STEP Fellowship to support their participation in private lessons through the Community Music School
• Lifestyle Spending Account for eligible employees to reimburse personal expenses related to health, fitness, family, emotion and social wellness.

The CKC program aims to help pregnant people and children apply for Medicaid or CHIP insurance. Medicaid and CHIP offer free or low-cost health insurance for kids and teens. Who is eligible for a free Ohio Identification Card?

In order to qualify for a Free Ohio Identification Card (ID):

How do I get a free Identification Card (ID)?

Ohio Identification (ID) Cards are issued to Ohio residents who do not have a valid driver license. If an individual has a driver license in a different state and applies for an Ohio ID, the driver license from that state will be canceled.

Ohio ID cards are valid for four years or eight years and there is no minimum age for obtaining one. You must provide proof of:

• Full legal name
• Date of birth
• Social Security number (if ever assigned)
• Legal presence
• Ohio residency

🔹Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah or Chanukkah) is a Jewish holiday that lasts for eight nights and usually occurs in December. This year it's starting the evening of Wednesday, Dec 25, 2024–Thursday, Jan 2, 2025. It is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah celebrates a military victory of the Jews over foreign rulers. We know many traditions are associated with this holiday such as delicious potato latkes, the Dreidel game, and the lighting of candles at sundown. Students may be learning about these cultural traditions and practices in class. You can help expand student learning by sharing some of the resources and activities provided below.

We would like to wish a Happy Kwanzaa to all those celebrating!

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West and Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was created: 1) Reaffirm and restore African heritage and culture. 2) To introduce and reinforce the Nguzo Saba or the Seven Principles. 3) To serve as a nationally celebrated communal and non-heroic holiday.

All CCS Pathway families are invited to attend CIHS International Festival. It will be an evening of international cuisine, entertaining music and a look at all that your pathway high school has to offer! There will be musical performances by the orchestra, modern band, world percussion and will feature Ecole Kenwood, CSIA & WLMS musicians! There will also be CIHS Caregiver discussion panels, where you can learn about language & curricular offerings, CIHS athletics and an opportunity to meet community partners.

Kwanzaa is a 7-day celebration that honors community, family and heritage of African American culture and African traditions. Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili word that means “first harvest” and is based on the principles of Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles). The Ohio History Connection and TAWI Family Village will celebrate Kwanzaa with African drumming, music, dance, storytelling and hands-on art activities. They will also feature a Kwanzaa ornament display, with a winning ornament being featured and recognized at the culmination of the celebration. This is a free, family-friendly event. The program is free but advance registration is recommended.
