East Side Connect - May 2024

Message from the Superintendent
Hello East Side,
I want to take a moment to congratulate you on completing the 2023-2024 school year and to congratulate the graduating class of 2024! I hope you take what you learned at ESUHSD with you in your future endeavors.
This year, our district had the honor of earning a number of awards for our work. Among our achievements:
ESUHSD earned the Bold Steps for Children Award at the 2024 Santa Clara County Children’s Summit
ESUHSD earned the “Outstanding Civic Education School District Award” from the Santa Clara Office of Education’s (SCCOE) 2024 Power of Democracy convening
Yerba Buena High School receiving the prestigious 2024 Civic Learning Award of Distinction from State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.
ESUHSD Educators earned awards ranging from the Dr. TJ Owens Education Award from the NAACP to the “Civic Education Outstanding Educator Award” from SCCOE
Our students’ outcomes drove many of the recognitions and students themselves have a lot to be proud of in their achievements:
1,753 seniors took advantage of the Spartan East Side Promise Program and were accepted to San Jose State University
Two students were among the winners for the District Attorney’s 2023 “Justice for All” Art Contest
Independence and Oak Grove High School Band and Color Guard performed at the 2024 London New Year’s Day Parade
James Lick High School’s Boys Baseball earned its first title since 1971 joining the long list of championship-winning teams throughout the district this year
All of these are only a few of the stories of the great work that happens throughout East Side. I am filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible achievements and the hard work by our students, staff, and community to get there. Thank you.
Looking ahead, this summer we will finalize actions in the 2024-2025 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) to continue building equitable communities through and address the needs of our students. I look forward to start next school year strong, build on the achievements we had this year, and have even more students prepared to take advantage of the Spartan East Side Promise next year.
I’m wishing you all a restful and enjoyable summer break.
All the best,
Glenn Vander Zee

Board of Trustees Receives Presentation on the 2024-2025 Local Control Accountability Plan
Teresa Marquez, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services provided a presentation on the preliminary information about input collected from stakeholders and proposed changes to action items for the 2024-25 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is a three-year plan that describes the goals, actions, services, and expenditures to support positive student outcomes that address state and local priorities. The LCAP provides an opportunity for school districts to share their stories of how, what, and why programs and services are selected to meet the needs of our students.
Among the highlights in the presentation are that:
Data and the input collected in surveys continues to demonstrate a need to focus on the whole child - with a specific area of interest to elevate the voices of our students
ESUHSD’s plan will continue to be grounded in building equitable communities through the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
ESUHSD’s Projected Supplemental Funding for Increased and Improved Services for 2024-25 is approximately $25 million based on an estimated unduplicated percentage of 50.92%
