NOHL CANYON ROADRUNNER NEWS
MARCH 17TH -23RD: WEEKLY PUBLICATION
Message from Principal Strickland
It has been a great week at Nohl Canyon!
Monday, we recognized our students for their highest attendance for the month of January with a schoolwide BBQ. Wednesday, our upper grade students learned about Fossils in our Backyard with an interactive lecture presentation. Thursday evening, our LEGO Robotics team had strong showing in competition at Portola Middle School.
March Madness continues and will conclude this week. We have four divisions of teams in competition: 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, and a Girls Division. We will crown champions in each division this week. Winners are playing for bragging rights and a pizza party!
This week, our teachers will honor selected students with RAD awards. Teachers will be reaching out to families to notify students receiving the awards as well as with the times of the ceremonies on Wednesday, 3/20.
Our school musical, Frozen Jr. is just around the corner. If your child is participating, please see tech week information below.
We got some difficult news regarding the future of GaGa ball this week. Please see the message below. If your kiddo is someone that loves GaGa ball, please talk with them regarding the news.
As we come close to Spring Break, please be sure to come and check our lost and found. We are overflowing with items. Unretrieved items will be donated over Spring Break.
A great week ahead to all Roadrunners!

NC GaGa Ball Update
Sad news on NC GaGa Ball Equipment
We have received some unfortunate news related to our GaGa Ball equipment. Due to a change in the district’s insurance policy terms, we cannot continue to support the use of GaGa Ball equipment on our campus. As such, sadly, our GaGa Ball equipment will be going away.
You should be proud to know that Nohl Canyon was the only school to successfully build and have students use GaGa Ball equipment. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your care, support, and generosity in providing this for our kiddos. It has been a pleasure to see our students play and compete together and we are disappointed to see it go.
Please know that our Nohl Canyon School Association will be fully reimbursed for all dollars spent on the equipment. In addition, we look forward to partnering as a school with our students, parents, and district representatives to identify alternative ways to engage our kids in positive play during recess.
Check the Lost and Found - Unretrieved items to be donated soon
Our wonderful Lost and Found is overflowing. Please come and check to make sure your kiddo retrieves their precious items. We will be donating unretrieved items over Spring Break.
Student of the Month Focus for March
Student of the Month Recognition - March Focus - R.A.D. + O
This month's focus for our Student of the Month will include our guiding concept for our school: RAD Roadrunners. Each Core Belief has a corresponding Expectation that guides students both inside and outside of the classroom environment. As part of this concept we believe embodying these qualities and setting and working toward small goals on a daily basis will help our students Win the Day (school motto)! This month, each teacher will recognize four students that embody these qualities.
Core Belief (Expectation)
Respectful (Kindness)
Accountable (Ownership)
Dedicated (Resilient)
O = Outstanding Roadrunner (All qualities)
5th Grade Physical Fitness Testing
Happening now, 2/26-3/23, our 5th graders will take the Physical Fitness Test. The test covers five areas of fitness. Students will test with their 5th grade teacher.

Cell Phone Use - "NO CELL, BELL to BELL"
Nohl Canyon is beginning to see more students carrying their own cell phones. Please discuss with your child the guidelines for cell phones/communication devices (watches) while at school:
1) NO CELL from BELL to BELL - cell phones need to be turned OFF and stored in students backpack from first bell to dismissal bell.
2) Students who need to contact parents/guardians are expected to come to the front office to make the phone call.
3) Students who do not follow the guidelines:
1st occurrence: warning - expected to place phone back in backpack
2nd occurrence: cell phone confiscated - Parent Pick-up in office

California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS)
California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS), launched in 2022, aims to prepare California children for post-secondary education expenses financially. Eligible low-income public school students in grades 1-12 and all California newborns, regardless of income, automatically receive funded savings accounts through CalKIDS. Students within our District may be eligible to access these funds upon enrollment in higher education institutions, utilizing them for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and other educational expenses. Low-income California public school students identified by the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) were automatically enrolled in CalKIDS if registered in grades 1-12 during the 2021-22 school year or in 1st grade during the 2022-23 school year.
Nohl Canyon OC Run Club Returns
Nohl Canyon Run Club is back!
The NC Run Club is for students interested in participating in the "Kids Run the OC" and the OC 5K marathon (race day is May 4). "Running Club" will meet after school every Monday and Tuesday from 2:30 -3:15. For our "Kids Run the OC" participants, the goal is to complete 25 miles by race day (May 4) and then complete the final 1 mile on race day. For students looking to participate in the OC 5K, the goal is to increase their distance and endurance through proper training.
All students participating in the after school run program must be signed upon the google form. No student will be allowed to participate in the program if they are not registered. Once registered on the google form, you then must register for the final mile or the 5k run through runsign up, which is listed in the slide show.
For questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gardner sgardner@orangeusd.org. We understand students may already be participating in Monday or Tuesday after school programs and are welcome to attend when they can.

Parent Parking Lot Volunteers Welcome!
Parking Lot Procedures
Thank you for making our parking lot procedures during drop-off and pick-up a safe and efficient machine. We serve a large number of vehicles in short period of time.
Thank you for your continued help with a few critical items:
- Please remember our Lower lot is Staff Only Parking. The lower entrance on Nohl Canyon RD is ENTRANCE ONLY in the Afternoon for Middle Lane traffic going to park in the FAR lot. Two-way use of this entrance presents a significant hazard to entering cars and pedestrian traffic.
- Please be kind to our parking lot volunteers. They make the whole thing work.
- Please ask your kiddos to walk when in front of school. Running children in the pick up area presents several hazards. Safety is our first priority.
- Trinity School Parking Lot is CLOSED for drop-off and pick-up parking.
- Parents, with respect to Trinity Pre-School and their families, we are not allowing Nohl Canyon families to park in the Trinity parking lot. Please follow this guideline and support us in keeping a positive community relationship with Trinity School. Trinity will often allow us to use their lot for special events but should not be used for drop-off or pick-up.
- Please remain clear of the Trinity lawn areas. Trinity lawns should not be used for student waiting for drop-off or pick-up. Students should always be picked up from our school site. If students are still here after 2:40pm, we bring them behind our school gates into our QUAD area for safety until parent pick-up. Please do not have your students wait at the Trinity site for pick-up.
- Please be sure to use crosswalks when crossing all major roads. Students being dropped off on Nohl Canyon Rd. and then proceeding across the street, presents a significant hazard to those students.
- Keep in mind, the Nohl Canyon Rd. entrance to our parking area is only to be used during afternoon pick-up and is limited to Middle Lane traffic that is pulling all the way through the lot to park in the back school lot.
Parents, Please watch the following video on Parking Lot Procedures
