Douglas-Sarpy 4-H Update
Welcome to the Douglas-Sarpy 4-H Newsletter. Staff are wrapping up at the NE State Fair and look forward to our new 4-H year that kicks off in October.
Make sure to try and attend the End of the Year Banquet on Oct. 24 (see the blue box at the bottom of this email for details).

Highlight of the Week
4-Hers of the Week - The Nebraska 4-H Livestock Achievement Participants
The Nebraska 4-H Livestock Achievement Program is designed to promote all educational aspects of 4-H livestock projects including selection, production, leadership, and exhibition by recognizing youth striving to improve in their livestock project knowledge and leadership.
The program recognizes Members of Excellence across all 4-H livestock project areas, including: beef, sheep, meat goat, swine, dairy cattle, dairy goat, rabbit, and poultry. Pictured are the Nebraska 4-H participants.
Douglas-Sarpy had 13 4-Hers who were recognized as "Members of Excellence"

Project of the week - Grow Sunflowers
Enter Sunflowers in the fair! Any Sunflower under 3" diameter, youth will need 5 stems, and flowers 3" or more in diameter will need 3 stems.
Remember, the cultivar or variety name must be included on all entry cards.
Containers holding the flowers will not be judged; however, they should be CLEAR GLASS CONTAINERS of a neutral color that won't tip over and of adequate size to display blooms. Any exhibit not in a clear glass container will be dropped one ribbon placing. Containers should be picked up by the exhibitor when the fair closes.

DIAMOND CLOVER PROGRAM - Due Sept. 30
The Diamond Clover Program gives youth a structured opportunity to learn and practice skills that prepare them for success in the future. Participants earn rewards for setting goals, trying new things, and keeping records. All youth are invited to participate, regardless of enrollment. Learn more at 4h.unl.edu/diamond-clover

Dog AKC Registration
What benefits do you get as a 4-H youth if you get your dog AKC registered?
• Platte Valley Kennel Club will cover ALL fees for you to get your dog AKC registered! (you dog does NOT need to be a purebred, they have other types of registrations for non-purebred dogs!)
• Any 4H dog person also registered with AKC as a Junior and the dog is AKC registered, can enter regular AKC classes in the trial for only $10.

Companion Cat
Companion Cat Science is a self-paced learning opportunity offering educational information about caring for and showing cats. The online course is great for middle-school-aged youth but is open to all youth regardless of age who are looking to learn more about cats and the 4-H cat project.

End of the Year Banquet
The annual End of the Year Banquet is where youth will get their special awards and premium checks. All 4-H youth are invited to attend with their families and enjoy a light meal and fun celebration.
