PRINCIPAL ANDERSON: SCHOOL SAFETY
East Families,
Recently there have been questions and inquiries regarding our safety protocols and measures, and how we’ve attempted to train/prepare our staff and students for emergency situations.
Therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to share how we approached this school year and how we plan to move forward.
Starting this school year (2024-25), Glenbard District 87, in collaboration with the “I Love U Guys” Foundation (learn more about the organization here), adopted a new standard response protocol . This was done in an effort to systematize and simplify our schools’ response in emergency situation. As part of the implementation process at East, we took the following steps:
Posted the response protocol near the door inside of every classroom, office, and other spaces throughout the building occupied by students and/or staff. You can view the posted protocol here.
Introduced staff to the new protocol at the start of the year during one of our August Institute Day breakout sessions. As part of the breakout session, staff were shown this video.
Shared the video linked above, along with some of the protocol language, with families via S’more, our Principal's Newsletter platform, on August 14th. See here.
Communicated to families our plan to run the safety drills and introduce our students to the new protocol via SchoolMessenger on August 26th. That notification message can be viewed here.
Introduced students to the new protocol on August 30th when we practiced a series of safety drills in partnership with the Lombard Police Department. During this time, students were also shown the video linked above.
In addition to the initial steps taken above, we took time during Ram Time Homeroom on Monday, October 14th, to provide clarity and remind our students and staff of these protocols. It is unfortunate that the following day presented us with a situation that warranted putting our protocol into action. Please know that after each of the safety incidents we have been faced with this year, time has been taken to reflect on our decision-making and assess our practices. We understand that there are areas that can be improved and we are working to do just that. Between our current safety measures and the changes we’ve recently made to our spectator expectations at football games, students and staff are safe here. Glenbard East is a safe place. That being said, I understand the concern that many have expressed. To that end, both here at East and at the district level, we are looking to improve by continuously assessing our practices, as well as researching and identifying ways that we can better provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.
Moving forward, we continue to encourage students to report suspicious or alarming behaviors to school staff in a timely manner. If they see something, we want them to say something. Please reinforce this with your student. Additionally, please take a moment to review with your student our standard response protocol, as well as, the various safety measures we currently have in place. We also ask that you talk with your student about using social media responsibly. It is imperative that we all do our part to keep our building safe and secure.
Despite our recent challenges, we still have high hopes that Every Ram will feel safe, welcomed, and supported Every Day!
FAMILIES CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE
Glenbard uses the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages to your mobile phone with important information about events, school closings, safety alerts and more.

ENGINEERS VISIT EAST FOR ENGINEERING CAPSTONE
On Friday, October 4, our capstone students had their initial visits from their Engineer mentors from Helander (Lombard), and Trelleborg (Streamwood). The mentors will be working with our Capstone students throughout the school year to invent a mechanical solution to a problem that the students prove is valid.

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON, SHARES TIPS ON WAYS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS
High school is filled with new learning opportunities and limitless possibilities for students. There are a variety of ways families can support and guide students throughout high school.
Here are a few ways to support students:
Provide support at home
- Help your teen get organized
- Share time management tips
- Encourage good study habits
- Discuss assignments
- Be interested
- Offer specific praise for hard work
- Watch for frustration
- Establish a regular time for homework
- Choose a place to do homework and remove distractions
Tap into resources, opportunities of Glenbard Hour
The Glenbard Hour is a valuable resource in students’ schedule. This dedicated time each week allows students to access their teachers for the support they need to experience academic success. During the twice weekly Glenbard Hour, students are involved in making choices; seeking help; getting involved in physical activities; learning new concepts and gaining new skills.
Encourage your student to tap into the many resources and opportunities available through the Glenbard Hour each week.
Take advantage of free GPS Parent Series events
We are so fortunate to have the GPS Parent Series, which provides families with free support and tips from national parenting experts and local educators. Each week, GPS speakers discuss a range of topics that all families face as teens make their way through adolescence to adulthood. GPS also offers programs relevant to families of children in early childhood education and elementary school. Check out the list of free GPS programs and get the webinar links on the GPS Parent Series website.
Participate in extracurriculars
Also, encourage your student to get involved in events at school and participate in clubs, sports and activities. Students who get involved at school have a greater sense of belonging and do better academically and emotionally.
High school is a growing experience for students and their families alike. We partner with families to support students and prepare them to achieve their goals.
