VOGELTOWN SCHOOL PANUI
TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 2, WEEK 4, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHANAU!
The sporty issue!
Kia ora koutou parents and whānau.
It is not uncommon to wander the school and see large numbers of our children physically active and engaged in games, or teachers and parents coaching. Alongside this, winter sports are well underway and many of our Year 5/6 children are involved in interschool sports and competitions. Across our school the teachers are also trying to deliver a more inclusive model of health and physical education.
Physical activity has many benefits. We often tend to think of the reasons for being active is to get fit or lose weight but there are other reasons too:
- Physical activity improves brain power. Regular exercise results in growing more brain cells.
- Physical activity boosts energy levels. Aerobic exercise increases the number of mitochondria in our cells, which are responsible for producing energy the body can use.
- Physical activity builds a health buffer for retirement. Exercise improves the quality and experience of your life post-retirement.
- Physical activity improves the way we connect with our children. Healthy behaviours are set in our youth, so this means teaching our children to love exercise. You'll not only get the health benefits of physical activity, but also strengthen the bond with your kids in a fun and meaningful way.
- Physical activity improves our mood. Being physically active helps regulate the systems affected by depression by improving sleep, boosting your mood, and increasing your energy levels.
Many thanks to the teachers and parents who support our children in sports and activities and also to Michelle Sleep, who co-ordinates the many sports available for children at Vogeltown School. The role they perform shows that we value their involvement and goes a long way towards making this a positive experience for all children.
Kia pai tō rā whakatā. Have a great weekend!

GYM SPORTS
Many thanks to Mrs Lewis and Mrs Broderick for their work leading into this and their supervision on the day too. The success of our children is a reflection of the time they have also put into this.

INTERSCHOOL RESULTS
Interschool results vs Central 2024
Rugby: Vogeltown 98 - 29
Netball A: Vogeltown 11 – 10
Football: Central 11 - 0
Netball B: Central 6 - 5
Chess: Vogeltown 13 - 11
Indoor Bowls: Central 7 - 5
Basketball: Vogeltown 16 - 8
Since Vogeltown won two out of the three NPPA competition games (netball and rugby) we claimed the coveted Carrington Shield, which is contested annually between Central and Vogeltown.
All games were played fairly and were tough, showcasing the competitive spirit of both teams. We have been super impressed by the attitude shown by all of the children involved, especially when results have not been to their liking. The resilience and determination to keep going and desire to improve with each game embodies the ‘going forward’ part of our school vision.
Ka mau te wehi!

DADS AND DAUGHTERS
We are continuing the tradition of the bi-annual ‘Dads and Daughters’ breakfast. It is going to be held on Friday 21st June at 7:30am in the school hall.
This event is generously supported by the Vogeltown Home and School Committee and it is great to see our community spirit come alive at this time!
We invite all ‘daughters’ at school to come along with their Dad or significant other adult male (such as their grandad, uncle, cousin, brother) to enjoy some quality time together. We will also have a group of ‘surrogate Dads’ available - local police officers, Taranaki rugby players and some of our own teachers - on this day for those daughters who are unable to have someone with them on this morning.
It's something you don't want to miss so mark it on the calendar now! More details will be sent home via a notice very soon.
GREAT WORK ZAYNE!
Well done to Zayne from Room 13 for the wonderful writing he has done about an imaginary creature - the Cird, which is a rare animal that lives in Japan.
GET LEARNING THOSE SPELLATHON WORDS!
Just a reminder about the Spellathon - this is a fantastic learning opportunity, as well as a great fundraiser for our school! We are encouraging our tamariki to practise their spelling words regularly for when they get tested in a couple of weeks time. Thank you for your support, whānau!
