Family Fun Night - early edition!
We are just a few minutes away from kicking off Family Fun Night at Stuart Hobson! Our PTA is sponsoring this community building event to bring families together for dinner, music and all-around good times together. I hope to see you there!
Staff (teacher) Appreciation Week is Next Week
There are a number of expressions of gratitude planned for next week between the PTA and school leaders. Two ways every family can participate are to a) come to the school on Sunday night to "chalk" your appreciation on our steps; and b) engage in "Thankful Thursday." Please work with your child to hand write notes of appreciation to our staff. Please keep in mind that we recognize all staff this week. Homeroom teachers might have the closest relationship our caregivers but our specials teachers, inclusion specialists, instructional aides, culture cultivators, coaches, office staff, and custodial team members and more also care deeply for your child and would love your words of appreciation as well.
Enrollment is happening now! We have surpassed our enrollment benchmark at both schools! With over 60% of students enrolled for next year, we still need families to re-enroll. You can do do now. Enrollment can be completed via paper or online (preferred). To complete online enrollment, visit https://aspen.dcps.dc.gov/aspen-login/go. Returning families will login to the platform using their Parent Portal credentials. If you do not know your Parent Portal credentials or need to update your email address, please email shelia.roy@k12.dc.gov or tanisha.montgomery@k12.dc.gov. A valid email address is required to use online enrollment.
State testing is still ongoing for students in grades 3-5. One more week for each grade level!
- May 7 - 9 - Math for 4th graders
- May 14 - 16 - Math for 3rd and 5th graders
- Make up testing with be ongoing on Mondays and Fridays and other non-testing days through May 22.
The Capitol Hill Classic - Big Fun and Fundraiser!
The Capitol Hill Classic is not only our biggest community event of the year, it's also our PTA's biggest fundraiser. All Panther students can help the cause by asking friends and family to "Fund My Run." (Even if they're not running in the race, they can still participate!) Participating students who earn donations from more than 10 people are eligible for great prizes! Visit capitolhillclusterschool.org/classic for all the information. And be sure to register to run on May 19!
NOTE: We want all Cluster students to have the opportunity to run in the Classic. The registration fee is NOT a barrier to participation. If you need financial assistance with registration, please contact Ms. Montgomery (tanisha.montgomery@k12.dc.gov) and Shelia Roy (shelia.roy@k12.dc.gov).
To help promote the event, students and staff can wear their Classic t-shirts from past races on Wednesday, May 8.

The Capitol Hill Classic, coming up on May 19, is the biggest Cluster community event and fundraiser of the year—which means it's time for the Classic Fund My Run campaign (formerly known as the Classic Pledge Drive). Fund My Run engages all Cluster students in fundraising for our school by asking friends, family, neighbors, or complete strangers to support them as they run in the Capitol Hill Classic—ergo Fund My Run. Every dollar earned through Fund My Run goes to helping our kids, classrooms, and community.
You may have questions. Hopefully, I have answers:
Who participates in Fund My Run?
All Cluster students at Peabody, Watkins, and Stuart-Hobson can participate. Even if they're not running in the Classic itself, they can still help raise funds for our Cluster community.
Ok, what do I do?
- Register to run the Classic at www.capitolhillclassic.com.
- Tomorrow morning, look for an email with a link to your child's/children's customizable Fund My Run page. If you cannot wait, go to https://chc.fundmy.run/ and find your child/children's page/pages.
- Customize the page with a pic and a personal message.
- Share the link via email, social media, WhatsApp, Slack, carrier pigeon, sidewalk chalk...whatever floats your boat. Ask people to "Fund My Run!"
What's in it for the kids?
PRIZES! The Washington Capitals have generously donated some goodies for our top fundraisers.
- The first 30 Cluster students to earn donations from 10 people will win a bobblehead of Caps goalkeeper Darcy Kuemper.
- Students who earn donations from 20 people or more will be entered into a raffle to win tickets to a future Caps game!
The Classic - including Fund My Run - is the biggest Cluster PTA fundraiser of the year. The money we raise goes toward academic and classroom support and supplies at Watkins, free community events like Family Fun Night this Friday, Food Prints, specials (Art, Library, Music, PE, Science), garden maintenance, Flex enrichment scholarships, teacher appreciation and so much more. And with potential DCPS budget cuts looming, our support is as important as ever!

Aspen Parent Portal Update from Central Office
Greetings DCPS Families! As we prepare for the launch of online enrollment, the District will be centrally resetting the passwords for all users who have not accessed the ASPEN Parent Portal on March 25. The email will be titled "Welcome to the ASPEN Parent Portal". Please test and save these credentials, as families will use the same log in ID email and password to access the online enrollment platform starting March 29. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Montgomery or Mr. Roy.

The DCPS Chancellor's Parent Advisory Board is now accepting applications for School Year 2024-2025. The Advisory Board provides a space, on a monthly basis, for parents and caregivers to engage with the Chancellor, DCPS leadership, and various teams to learn about and provide input on current or emergent priorities and initiatives.
Application translations available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Amharic.
The application closes at 11:59 pm on May 6, 2024.

DC CAPE Testing for 3-5th Graders
DC CAPE (formerly PARCC) is starting soon! As usual, 3rd-5th grade students will take the DC Science assessment (5th grade only) and DC CAPE for ELA and Math.
The science test includes 4 units that will be completed in three testing days. The ELA and Math tests include 3 units each that will be tested one day at a time. We have been preparing at school and caregivers can help students prepare at home by
- Re-emphasizing the importance of doing their best on the test
- Be aware of the testing dates and ensure a good night's sleep
- Come to school on time and eat breakfast
- Practice at home

April 30 - May 2 - ELA for 3rd and 5th graders
May 7 - 9 - Math for 4th graders
May 14 - 16 - Math for 3rd and 5th graders

WATCHDOGS are Back!
Back by popular demand, we are restarting the Watkins WatchDOGS (Dads [& Others] of Great Students) Volunteer program!!
What is WATCH D.O.G.S.?
WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads [& Others] Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative.
What is the goal of a WATCH D.O.G.S. program?
To provide positive caregiver role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
Who are WatchDOGS and how does WATCH D.O.G.S. work?
WatchDOGS are fathers, mothers, grandparents, and uncles/aunts who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. school. WATCH D.O.G.S., a K-12 program, invites caregivers to volunteer at least one day at their child’s/student’s school for part or all of the day during the school year. Identification will be checked upon entrance.
Is this program only for Dads?
Absolutely not!! We welcome all caregivers to volunteer.
What do WatchDOGS do (while they are at school)?
During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a WatchDOGS volunteer dramatically reduces reports of bullying. On the day of their participation, WatchDOGS participants are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. name tag identifying them as a WatchDOG.
What days can I volunteer and how do I sign up?

FoodPrints Caregiver Volunteer Sign Ups
Hello parents and guardians! We're back again for another year of FoodPrints at Peabody and Watkins Elementary and we are looking for parents to volunteer in our classroom and garden!
We'll have a maximum number of four (4) slots available for parent volunteers for each class. We'll be adding more dates in the coming weeks so be sure to check back frequently if you don't see your child's class as yet. Please reach out if you have any questions to ms. Field trip chaperones- Complete a Clearance application
Exceptions
Exceptions may be granted to the DCPS Clearance process in the following situations:
- You are volunteering for a one-time, on-campus event, like Career Day or Field Day. Please email the Clearance Team at dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov to confirm whether you qualify for a clearance exception.
- You are a potential volunteer with an active secret or top-secret federal security clearance. Individuals in this group should complete the Federal Security Clearance Verification letter in lieu of being fingerprinted with DCPS. The original signed verification form and a copy of a state issued photo ID to dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov
