A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Watertown Communiity,
As we reach the end of another successful school year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your support and involvement in our school community. The partnership between our schools and families is essential for our students' success, and your dedication has been evident in countless ways. From attending parent-teacher conferences and school events to helping with homework and projects, your engagement has made a significant difference in our students' educational experiences.
I hope you find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy your time together over the coming months. Summer offers a wonderful opportunity for families, caregivers, and friends to spend quality time together, explore new activities, and create lasting memories. Whether you are planning a vacation, participating in community events, or simply enjoying the warm weather at home or in the park (I hear the new splash pad at Filippello Park is amazing), I encourage you to make the most of this time. It's also a great chance for our students to pursue their interests and passions, whether through reading, sports, arts, camps, or other activities that inspire them.
This summer, we are also focused on preparing for the upcoming school year. With fifteen of our amazing staff members retiring and others moving on to new adventures, our hiring teams are hard at work. We are excited to welcome several new teachers and support staff to our team, as well as Ms. Penelope Giannakopoulos, our new Assistant Director of Student Services, and Ms. Lauren Hohler, our new Coordinator of Mental and Behavioral Health Services.
Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome everyone back for another year of learning and growth on September 3. We are already planning and developing new initiatives and programs to enhance our students' experiences, including the adoption of our new K-5 literacy program, Wit and Wisdom, and continuing with year two of the implementation of Restorative Practices.
Thank you once again for your continued support and partnership. Wishing you all a joyful, restful, and safe summer!
Warm regards,
Dede Galdston, Superintendent of Schools
Watertown Celebrates New Graduates
We are extremely proud of the 157 new graduates of Watertown High School.
Last week's graduation was a celebration of their hard work, dedication, and determination. It was a beautiful night at Victory Field and served as an opportunity for teachers, staff, family, and friends to celebrate our newest graduates.
The Class of 2024 began their High School experience in the midst of the COVID pandemic. WHS Valedictorian Nina Paquette praised her classmates for their adaptability and highlighted how this group of Watertown High graduates became a community, despite an unprecedented beginning to their time at WHS.
Invoking the song "You're Gonna Go Far," by Watertown's resident Noah Kahan, Nina encouraged classmates to "say whatever you feel, be wherever you are" as they embark on their next journey in life.
WHS Salutatorian Sidney Hackett recalled the first time many members of the Class of 2024 first met: at a 5th grade social for incoming Watertown Middle School students. He noted that this same group of students finished their High School career just steps from where they met at WMS, but said they couldn't be more different than they were 7 years ago.
Sidney called their Middle School and High School experience the most unique in Watertown history, citing the COVID pandemic and the move from the old WHS into the Moxley building. He said his classmates were brought together in a way nobody could have predicted and said this graduation was a testament to their resilience.
Taking the Next Step
With a Watertown High School diploma in hand, our graduates now embark on the next chapter of their lives. As you'll see below, their next steps will take them to nearly 60 different colleges, universities, and branches of the military.
Seal of Biliteracy
We are so proud of our record-breaking Class of 2024 as 38 seniors achieved the Seal of Biliteracy. That represents 23% of the graduating class, the most students and the highest percentage of Watertown High graduates to earn the Seal.
For this honor, students need to demonstrate an intermediate-high or advanced levels of language in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English and one other language. Congratulations to our group of bilingual graduates!
Vocational, Career and Technical Education Milestone
We are so proud of our first four vocational/technical pathway graduates, all of whom graduated from the Pre-Engineering pathway.
Vocational/Technical pathway graduates complete over 1000 hours of coursework in pre-engineering as required by Massachusetts law. The skills developed in this program put these graduates on an accelerated path to engineering college, or pursuits in other STEM fields.
Two of these students will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall and will receive college credit there for some of their WHS coursework. The other two are pursuing further STEM education at the University of Arizona and MassBay Community College. Congratulations to our first class of vocational/technical graduates!"
The Class of 2028
8th grade graduation was celebrated at Watertown Middle School on Friday. Students were recognized for their hard work and achievement across academics, athletics, and community service.
As Principal Giacobozzi told students, "You are Raiders now." Good luck to our incoming Watertown High School freshmen!
Happy Retirement!
As we do at the end of every school year, we say farewell to our retiring friends and colleagues. Our 15 retirees dedicated a combined 356 years of service to the children of Watertown. Thank you for all that you have done and we wish you well as your start this next exciting phase of life!
WHS Topping Off Ceremony
Last week, we celebrated a major milestone in the Watertown High School construction project with a topping off ceremony.
Members of the community had the opportunity to sign the ceremonial beam. It was a true celebration of all things Watertown, with past, present, and future Raiders taking the opportunity to sign a piece of Watertown High School history.
We are now less than 2 years away from the new WHS opening to students, with a planned move-in date set for April 2026.
Advancing Freedom
A group of Watertown High School students recently returned from a six-day field trip to Montgomery, Alabama where they immersed themselves in civil rights, social justice history, and service learning. The students visited the Equal Justice Initiative's National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Legacy Museum, and Freedom Monument, and engaged in community service with Meals on Wheels as part of the trip.
This week, students put together a powerful exhibition based on their trip called "Advancing Freedom." They turned the Watertown Middle School auditorium into a mini-museum where visitors learned about the Civil Rights movement and the history of racial inequity in the United States.
This was an amazing experience for anyone in attendance. Congratulations to our students on creating a truly outstanding display.
Field Day Fun!
Our elementary students had a blast participating in the annual field days at the Hosmer, Lowell, and Cunniff schools.
Thank you to all our teachers, staff, parents, and community volunteers -- including the Watertown Fire Department -- for making the 2024 field days ones to remember!
