Principal's Message
Monday marks the first day of our second round with our 2/4/6 classes as we begin the last week of school for 2020. We will be in these classes for the remainder of the semester which ends January 28th. Second semester begins on February 1st. On Thursday, the Superintendent sent a message to families about plans for the second semester of the school year. If you have not read it, I have included a link for you to read it (https://www.smore.com/x3jt5). You can also find a copy on the Meridian School District website.
One of the activities we have had during the first semester is our Homeroom period. On Fridays we have participated in Character Strong lessons. The lessons build from week to week and include an opportunity to connect with other students, a lesson, and then a "character dare" to then be discussed the following week. This past Friday, the lesson talked about the importance of having support during difficult situations. The lesson provided an opportunity for students to think about and record who they get support from and in what ways those people or activities provide support. It also challenged students to check in with their peers, friends and others to take care of each other to see how they are doing this winter.
At MHS, we continue to look for ways to improve and expand the support for students specific to our current remote learning environment. I have shared that information at various times throughout the semester. I hope you have found those ideas and resources helpful. Please continue to reach out and let us know there are specific needs. We have a network of people to help beyond academic concerns. If you are not sure who to reach out to or have any other questions or concerns, please contact me by email at dforbes@meridian.wednet.edu or by phone at 360-398-8111.
I wish you a favorable end to this year and a positive start to the new year.
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Go Trojans.
Derek O. Forbes
Winter Break December 21st - January 1st
T3 is designed for students to receive the support they may need in a particular class. This could be making up an assessment or working with someone in a small group to help ensure that concepts are being understood. Teachers can assign students to attend a T3 in which case attendance is mandatory.
Weekly Tech Tip
We are finding it difficult at times to reach families. This is concerning since emergencies happen and we need to be able to reach some right way. Your student could be sick or we may be inviting the student to come into school for some extra support. Perhaps a teacher or counselor has some concerns to share. We may be trying to set up a meeting with you to provide some assistance with class attendance or completing work.
Please take a moment and make sure that your address, phone numbers and email address are correct in Skyward. If you don't know your Skyward password, please call Robin Brinkman at 360 - 318 - 2284.
Winter Wishes
Donations will be accepted through Monday, December 14th.
Winter Wishes gives everyone who is a part of the Meridian High School family a chance to make a wish for someone else. Every year for the last 10 years, the leadership class has raised money to grant the wishes that students and staff make for other students in our school. It is a unique and special opportunity for all of us to think of others when we wish. Because of the thoughtful wishing of students in our school combined with the efforts of our leadership students, Winter Wishes has provided gifts for hundreds of our students every year.

What's Cooking in Food Science/Nutrition?
The student kitchens at MHS have been dark and cold the last few months, but parents and families may have benefitted from the at home, remote-learning situation as far as Culinary classes are concerned...
Meridian Foods & Nutrition students have been working through all the food groups over the course of the semester. After laying a foundation of nutritional knowledge with each one, Foods students have been rolling up their sleeves -- and washing their hands!! (safety & sanitation are always a priority, ever more so now!) -- and heating things up in their HOME kitchens! From muffins to meatballs, fruit smoothies to pico de gallo, and much, much more, students have been tuning in to recipe demo videos and taking selfies at home to showcase their culinary creations for class credit. The timing was perfect as we hit our Vegetables unit right at Thanksgiving and many Foods students contributed mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes to Thanksgiving meals. We're finishing the semester now with Fats & Oils...just in time for some Christmas cookies! And for their course Final...students are challenged to personally, independently, make a complete, well balanced meal -- including all the food groups -- for their family at home. (It needn't be 'gourmet' but how's that for a delicious Final "Exam"?!) I can't wait to see the photos they'll submit and the menus they'll come up with!
