CRLP Teacher Leader Invitational
Berkeley School of Education
2024 Theme: Investigating Banned Books
We hope that this email finds you hitting your stride in the classroom after these first, few grueling weeks of school. We are excited to re-connect with you all in person for CRLP's 2024 Teacher Leadership Invitational. The theme of this year's TL Invitational is Investigating Banned Books, and our goal is to swap ideas and discuss best practices for using read alouds of "controversial" texts to promote critical thinking, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our Three-Session Learning Series will include the following topics:
- Frequently Asked Questions about Banned and Challenged Books
- Analyzing Banned Books- Text Selection Considerations
- Exploring the Top 10 Most Targeted Books and Themes (ex: LGBTQ themes, sexually explicit content, African American history, etc.)
- Supporting Equitable Literacy Instruction through Text Selection, Analysis, and Use
- Recentering the Read Aloud in PK-12 Classrooms
- Networking with Passionate Literacy Educators from across the Bay Area
- (Oh, and most importantly) Receiving free books and swag!
We will meet during a series of three Wednesday evening sessions (October 9, October 23, and November 6 from 4:30-7:00), and as always, you can receive a small stipend for your participation if you attend all three dates and complete an Action Research project. As we did last year, we will meet in a hybrid in-person/virtual model. The first session on October 9 will be in-person here at Cal. We will provide a wonderful dinner, along with treats and prizes for you all. This year we will also try out something new; we will be hosting an additional (optional) Happy Hour/Action Research showcase on Friday, November 15.
As always, please forward this flyer to any potential Teacher Leaders you may know. We're making a concerted effort to reach out to more stellar teachers of color and LGBTQ+ educators to join our already diverse and amazing group of Teacher Leaders.
Cheers,
George & Kara
