Native American Heritage Month
The Stories of Indigenous Peoples
For way too long the relevant history of indigenous people on the North American continent and in the United States of America has been devalued or minimized. After a visit to the Eno River State Park in Durham and Orange Counties of North Carolina in October 2023, I recommitted myself as an educator to read and share these stories. The Eno River State Park is situated on the ancestral lands of the Eno, Occoneechee, and Shakori peoples. I had the opportunity in November 2023 to attend the annual American Indian Heritage Celebration in Raleigh, NC which celebrates the culture of the 8 recognized tribes of North Carolina. This newsletter features some of the most recent children's book titles I have read and shared with students in the library in November 2023 in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
